About York
I’ll never forget the drive up to York – we’d packed the car with enough snacks to feed a small army, but halfway there, just past the M1 services, the sat nav decided to throw a proper wobbly. It rerouted us down some winding country lane that felt like it hadn’t seen tarmac since the war, and we ended up doing a three-point turn in a puddle that nearly swallowed the wheels. My other half, Sarah, just laughed and said, “Well, at least it’s an adventure!” By the time we rolled into York, hearts racing a bit from the anticipation, the sun was dipping low, casting that golden glow over the city walls. We were buzzing – a proper getaway, just us two, no kids or deadlines.

Pulling up to the property, a cosy terraced cottage tucked away in a quiet spot near the River Foss, we were smitten straight away. It had that welcoming vibe, with a little front garden bursting with pots of herbs and flowers, and a red door that screamed “come on in.” First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags and cracked open a bottle of wine on the sunny patio, listening to the gentle hum of the city in the distance. No grand hotel fuss, just simple cottage bliss.

The next morning, we wandered hand-in-hand to Jorvik Viking Centre, only a short stroll away. It’s brilliant – you hop on those little carts and whizz through a recreated Viking street, complete with smells and sounds that make you feel like you’ve time-travelled. Sarah got the giggles at the animatronic poo joke; I pretended to be too cool for it, but honestly, it had me chuckling too. Lunch was fish and chips from a proper Yorkshire chippy nearby – crispy batter, mushy peas, the works. We ate them on a bench by the Ouse, watching rowers glide past, vinegar dripping everywhere. Cottage life chaos at its finest; I ended up with more salt on my shirt than on the chips.

Afternoons were for pottering. We’d pop to Bootham Bar, one of those ancient gates in the city walls, and climb up for views that make you feel like a king and queen. Then back to base for a brew and a natter about nothing much. One evening, trying to cook a roast in the compact kitchen turned into mild pandemonium – the oven timer wouldn’t stop beeping, and we juggled carrots like amateurs. Laughing through the smoke (okay, slight haze), we flopped on the sofa with a takeaway curry instead. Pure relaxed couple heaven.

It got me reflecting, sat there with the fairy lights twinkling outside. We’re always rushing about, aren’t we? But these little escapes, with their joyful mishaps and quiet joys, remind you what matters – good company, a full belly, and no agenda. York’s magic is in those everyday bits: a riverside walk at dusk, spotting herons by Clifford’s Tower, or just curling up with a book while rain patters on the window. We left feeling recharged, already plotting the next jaunt. If you’re after a chilled family-couple break, this is the ticket – chaos, cosiness, and all.
