About Cork
I’ll never forget the drive to our little holiday spot on the Sheep’s Head Peninsula—it started with such promise, windows down, fiddling with the sat-nav while my partner dozed in the passenger seat. We’d flown into Cork Airport that morning, grabbed a hire car, and set off westwards, the rolling green hills unfolding like a postcard. But about halfway there, near Bantry, the bloody thing decided to play up. No signal, no sense of direction, and suddenly we were veering off onto some narrow boreen that twisted through the mist. I was convinced we’d end up in the sea, but it turned out to be a happy accident—spitting us out right at the cottage door just as the sun dipped low.

Pulling up, I had this flutter of anticipation, wondering if it’d live up to the photos. But crikey, what a first impression! This characterful retreat for couples or a small family sits in the most peaceful spot on the peninsula, just 18 miles from Bantry’s harbour bustle. It’s got that cosy, lived-in charm—perfect for hunkering down after a day out, with views that make you forget the world.

The real magic kicked off the next morning when we decided to wander without a plan. No maps, just sturdy boots and a vague notion of the coastal paths. Sheep’s Head is a walker’s dream, all wild rugged cliffs and tranquil countryside rambles, and we stumbled straight into its hidden gems. First off, we got properly lost down a sheep-nibbled track that led to a secret cove I’ve since learned no tourist coach ever reaches. Tucked away below sheer drops, it was just us, seals barking offshore, and waves crashing on pebbled shores. We picnicked on cheese sarnies from a local Bantry deli, laughing at how we’d veered miles off the “official” peninsula waymarkings.

That set the tone—every day was about these off-the-beaten-track finds born from getting lost. One afternoon, aiming for a quick loop near Kilcrohane, we took a wrong turn onto a boggy path lined with fuchsia hedges bursting pink. It spat us out at an abandoned signal tower, half-swallowed by gorse, with 360-degree views over the Atlantic that stopped us in our tracks. Wind-whipped and exhilarated, we sat there with flasks of tea, feeling like we’d gatecrashed paradise. Another time, a “shortcut” through the fields led to a freshwater lake mirroring the heather hills—total fluke, no signs, just dragonflies and the odd heron. We skimmed stones till our arms ached, grinning like kids.

Of course, not every detour was smooth. Once, we bushwhacked back to the cottage after dark, scratched by brambles and starving, but it only made the turf fire and stew taste better. Looking back, I realise I needed that gentle nudge to switch off the phone and embrace the unknown. In a world of Instagram itineraries, getting lost on Sheep’s Head taught me the best memories hide where the paths fade. If you’re after proper escape, pack your sense of adventure and head there—you won’t regret it.
