About Cork
I’ll never forget the drive down to the Sheep’s Head Peninsula in west County Cork – a proper adventure that started with a comedy of errors. We’d set off from Dublin in high spirits, dreaming of fresh sea air and empty trails, but about halfway there, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and directed us onto a narrow, winding lane that was more puddle than path. Cue a tense 20 minutes reversing into a hedge while sheep looked on judgementally. Still, by the time we rolled up to this cosy two-bed cottage on the owner’s grounds, I was buzzing with anticipation. Tucked away with its own private courtyard and a wander into the mature garden, it felt like our little bolt-hole from the world – perfect for us two and the dog.

First impressions? Spot on. The place had that effortless charm, with everything we needed for a self-catering jaunt, and the views over to the tranquil cove had us grinning like kids. We couldn’t wait to hit the Sheep’s Head Way, that famous walking route right on the doorstep. Day one dawned bright and breezy – classic Irish welcome – so we laced up our boots and tackled the peninsula’s lighthouse loop. It’s about five miles of rugged coastal bliss, cliffs plunging into the Atlantic, gorse buzzing with bees, and not a soul in sight. We even spotted a pod of dolphins arcing through the waves offshore; proper magic that made the heart sing.

But oh, the weather – that great British leveller, even in Ireland! Next morning, the skies turned moody, lashing rain that turned the paths to slick mudslides. Our grand plan for the full peninsula traverse? Scrapped. Instead, we pivoted to a shorter loop closer by, maybe three miles along the cliff tops towards the old signal tower. It was gritty – wind whipping our faces, boots caked – but there’s something alive about trudging through it, isn’t there? Laughing at each other’s soggy state, we sheltered in a ruined bothy, brewing tea on the go. By afternoon, it cleared just enough for an evening amble down to the cove, seals barking hello from the rocks.

A couple of days in, the forecast promised more of the same, so we embraced the damp. One gloriously grey hike took us inland a bit along the Way’s gentler sections, through fern-choked valleys where the air smelled of wet earth and wild garlic. The rain held off long enough for a picnic (ham sandwiches never tasted so good), but we got caught in a downpour on the way back – a hasty dash that left us drenched and doubled over with giggles. It forced a bit of self-reflection, mind. Back at the cottage, towelling off, I realised how often I bulldoze through life’s plans. This trip? It taught me to lean into the whims of the weather, let the hikes unfold as they would. No epic 10-milers needed; those soggy strolls felt more real, more rewarding.

By the end of the week, we’d notched up a good 20 miles of mixed adventures – sun-kissed highs and squelchy lows – all without straying far from the door. If you fancy ditching the grind for proper nature immersion, this corner of Cork’s your spot. Just pack decent waterproofs and a sense of humour. We’re already plotting a return.
