About Cork
I’ll never forget the drive down to Skibbereen – we’d left early from Dublin, full of that buzzy anticipation you get before a proper Irish getaway, dreaming of cosy evenings and fresh air. Me and Sarah, just the two of us for a rare child-free break, sticking to the back roads through lush green hills that make your heart swell. But typical us, about an hour in, I took a wrong turn onto some narrow lane that looked promising on the sat-nav but turned into a comedy of errors. We ended up nose-to-nose with a farmer’s tractor, both of us reversing like amateurs until he waved us past with a grin and a thumbs-up. Laughed our heads off after – nothing says holiday like a daft mishap to break the ice.

Pulling into town, the first impressions were spot on. Skibbereen’s got that unpretentious charm – the river Ilen bubbling along, shops and pubs dotted about, all within easy strolling distance. Our place was this delightful house right in the heart of it, with off-road parking for two cars that felt like a luxury after the morning’s faff. Stepping inside, we were hit with this bright, airy sitting room, wooden floors gleaming underfoot, perfect for flopping down with a cuppa. The kitchen-diner was a dream too, kitted out for rustling up meals without any fuss – we were sold before we’d even unpacked.

We settled into that easy rhythm of cottage life straight away, the kind where plans are loose and simple pleasures take over. Mornings started with strong coffee at the dining table, peering out at the river while Sarah fiddled with the toaster – chaos ensued when it jammed on our first batch of soda bread, crumbs everywhere, but we just giggled and cracked open the butter. A short wander took us to the local market for cheese and scones, then a pint in one of the pubs by the water, chatting with locals about nothing much. Afternoons were for ambling along the river path, spotting herons and feeling that gentle West Cork magic wash over us.

One evening, we ventured out to Lough Hyne, that quirky saltwater lake just a quick drive away – swam in its peaty shallows till we were shivering and silly, then dried off with flasks of tea back at the house. The chaos peaked when I tried my hand at a stew in the kitchen, overseasoning it spectacularly with too much pepper from the spice rack. Sarah took the mick mercilessly, but we scoffed it anyway, curled up in the sitting room with a bottle of red, feet up on the coffee table.

Looking back, it was those little domestic hiccups amid the serenity that made it. We’re so caught up in the daily grind back home – work, kids, the lot – that this break was a gentle nudge to slow down, savour the mishaps and the quiet joys. Skibbereen and our wee haven nailed that relaxed couple vibe perfectly. Can’t wait to go back.
