About Cork
I’ll never forget the drive to our little holiday spot in Cork – we’d rented this cracking traditional whitewashed cottage right at the foot of the Slieve Miskish Mountains on the Beara Peninsula. Me, my other half, and our two mates piled into the car from Cork Airport, buzzing with that pre-holiday excitement, maps on laps (who needs sat-nav these days?). But about halfway there, disaster struck: I took a “shortcut” down a narrow lane that turned out to be a sheep track. We ended up proper stuck, wheels spinning in mud, laughing like idiots while a farmer with a sheepdog towed us out. “Welcome to Ireland,” he chuckled. By the time we arrived, covered in muck but grinning, the cottage looked like a dream – this charming hideaway, perfect for our gang, with plump sofas begging for a collapse and a wood burner ready for action.

First impressions? Magic. Nestled in Eyeries village, just a mile from those vibrant coloured houses that scream for a group selfie (we nailed one at golden hour), it felt like we’d stumbled into a secret world. No crowds, just us and the mountains looming like friendly giants. We chucked logs on the fire, cracked open some treats, and planned to explore – but not the tourist traps. Nah, we were all about getting lost, chasing hidden gems by accident.

Next morning, we wandered off the beaten track from the cottage, no real plan. A wrong turn led us to a wildflower-strewn path snaking up the hills – turned out to be an old smuggler’s trail, with sea views that stopped us dead. We picnicked there, wind whipping our hair, feeling like explorers. Back near Eyeries, we “accidentally” found a tucked-away beach cove, maybe two miles out, where seals bobbed about like nosy neighbours. No signs, no car park – just us slipping down a sheep path to turquoise water lapping black rocks. Pure bliss, especially when we skimmed stones and pretended we were kids again.

One afternoon, proper lost on a loop walk around the peninsula’s quieter flanks, we stumbled on a forgotten holy well – a tiny stone shrine dripping with clooties (those rag prayers tied to trees). Locals must use it; wild garlic scented the air, and we sat there reflecting. I thought about how we’re always rushing back home, chasing deadlines, missing these quiet moments. Why don’t I do this more? Gentle nudge to the soul, that was.

Evenings were for stumbling back to base, rain pattering the roof, tea brewing, tales flying. Another “mishap” took us to a hidden waterfall just off the lane – roaring after a shower, perfect for a daft splash. Eyeries’ own back lanes hid a wild meadow alive with butterflies; we lay there, spotting shapes in the clouds. No maps needed – getting lost unlocked the Beara’s best secrets, those off-radar spots that feel like they’re yours alone.

This Cork escape? Hidden paradise. If you fancy ditching the crowds for accidental adventures, grab a cottage like ours and let the peninsula work its wanders. We left knackered but buzzing, already plotting a return.
