About Cork
I’ll never forget the drive to our holiday spot in Adrigole – we’d rented a car at Cork Airport, punchy little thing that it was, and I was dead chuffed to be behind the wheel, blasting some trad tunes as we wound our way west. But about halfway there, disaster struck: I took a wrong turn onto one of those narrow boreens, convinced my phone’s satnav had gone rogue. We ended up bouncing along a mud track for what felt like hours, arguing over the map like proper eejits, until we finally looped back to the main road. Laughing about it now, but at the time, I was sweating bullets. Still, that little mishap built the anticipation – by the time we crested the hill into the Glen Lough Valley, cradled by the Caha Mountains, I was buzzing.

Pulling up to the place, my first impressions were spot on. This traditional stone farmhouse, right at the heart of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, looked like it had been plucked from a postcard. Cosy and welcoming, perfect for our group of mates needing a break from city chaos. We dumped the bags, cracked open a few tins, and within minutes felt that proper sense of sanctuary.

The real magic kicked off the next day when we decided to just wander, no plans, no maps. That’s when we stumbled on the hidden gems – proper off-the-beaten-track treasures you’d never find on TripAdvisor. First up, a tiny tarn tucked behind a clump of ferns, just a short hike from the door. We’d been faffing about on a sheep path, got properly lost in the mist, and bam – there it was, mirror-still water reflecting the mountains like a secret painting. We picnicked there for hours, skimmin’ stones and chatting rubbish, feeling like we’d gatecrashed paradise.

Later that afternoon, aiming for Adrigole Harbour for a bit of messing about on the water, we veered off down a unmarked lane on a whim. Ended up at this wee waterfall cascading into a peat-brown pool – no signs, no crowds, just the roar of water and us whooping like kids. I took a dip, freezing my bits off, but it was brilliant. Got lost again on the way back, mind, looping through boggy fields till we recognised our farmhouse’s chimney smoke. Pure gold.

One evening, after a day paddling kayaks at the harbour – nothing too flash, just pottering about spotting seals – we found a forgotten ruined bothy higher up the valley. Pushed open the creaky door (gently, like burglars), and inside was this stunning view over Lough Gal, the sun dipping behind the Cahas. Sat there with flasks of tea, reflecting on how I’d been run ragged at work lately. Needed this – getting lost isn’t a faff, it’s the best way to find yourself, innit? Gentle nudge to the soul.

We kept it local, never straying far – those accidental discoveries within a couple of miles made the stay unforgettable. If you’re after peace with a side of adventure, this corner of Cork’s your spot. Already plotting a return.
