About Cork
I’ll never forget the drive to our holiday home in Kilcrohane – it was one of those journeys that starts off full of promise and ends in a comedy of errors. We’d piled into the car in Cork city that morning, buzzing with excitement about escaping to the west coast. The kids were chattering about beaches, the dog was panting in the boot, and I was navigating with what I thought was a trusty app. Big mistake. About halfway there, the signal dropped, and suddenly we were on these narrow, twisting lanes that seemed to lead nowhere but sheep-dotted fields. Then came the mishap: a rogue pothole sent us lurching, and my thermos of tea exploded all over the passenger footwell. Cue soggy socks and much wailing from the back seat. “Mum, this is the worst holiday ever!” groaned my eldest. I stifled a laugh, mopping up with an old towel, secretly wondering if we’d ever find the place.

But as we crested the final hill, all that chaos melted away. There it was: a white-washed holiday home nestled snugly in this stunning countryside spot, with far-reaching views over Dunmanus Bay that stopped us dead in our tracks. The sun was dipping low, painting the water gold, and I felt that proper holiday magic kick in. First impressions? Bloody brilliant – or rather, dead gorgeous, in that understated Irish way. It’s got this brimming traditional charm, perfect for us lot with the dog in tow, like it was made for families or mates wanting a proper getaway.

We tumbled out, still a bit frazzled, and unpacked in record time. The views from the windows were unreal – you could just sit there with a cuppa, watching the bay sparkle. That first evening, we shook off the road woes with a gentle wander down to the secluded pebble beach just a mile away. It’s this hidden gem, all shingle and waves lapping quietly, with the dog bounding about like he’d won the lottery. We skimmed stones (me terribly, as usual) and breathed in that salty air, the kids forgetting their earlier grumbles.

Next morning, anticipation turned to action. We laced up for the Sheep’s Head Way coastal path, a two-mile amble that blew away any cobwebs. Rugged cliffs, wildflowers, and those bay views – it’s the sort of walk that makes you feel alive. We packed a picnic and found a spot overlooking the water, munching cheese sandwiches while the dog chased shadows. Lunch was at a nearby pub, warming coffee and hearty soup hitting the spot after the fresh air. There’s something about these historic sites and lovely coves dotted around – we spotted an old ruin on our ramble, whispering tales of fishermen past.

Looking back, that messy arrival was the perfect icebreaker. It reminded me how the best holidays aren’t flawless; they’re the ones where you laugh off the spills and sink into the charm. This hideaway gave us that in spades – pure, unhurried bliss on the edge of Dunmanus Bay. If you’re after a Cork escape with your crew (and pup), you won’t go wrong here. We’re already plotting a return.
