About Cork
I’ll never forget the drive to our holiday spot near Castletownbere – we’d been buzzing with excitement for days, imagining cosy evenings by the fire after days out in the fresh Irish air. Me and the wife, plus our two lads and their better halves, all piled into the car from Cork airport, sat-nav chirping away like an overenthusiastic tour guide. But about halfway, disaster struck: a rogue sheep decided our lane was prime grazing real estate. Cue 20 minutes of gentle honking and me hopping out to shoo it along, feeling like a proper townie intruder. The kids thought it was hilarious; I just prayed it wasn’t an omen.

Finally rolling up, though, all that faded. The house hit us like a warm hug – this beautiful, stylish sprawl sleeping up to eight, with panoramic views over Bere Island and Bantry Bay that had us all gawping from the driveway. It’s got that perfect mix: close enough to town for a quick pub lunch or shop, but tucked away for proper peace. We parked up easily on the massive private drive (room for five cars, no bother), kicked off our muddy boots in the utility room, and wandered in. Wheelchair access everywhere, multiple lounges and dining spots – ideal for our ragtag crew spreading out without tripping over each other.

First impressions? Magic. We cracked open the windows to that sea breeze, unpacked in rooms that felt like they’d been waiting just for us, and cracked on with the simple stuff. Mornings kicked off with brekkie chaos in the big kitchen – me burning the toast (as usual), everyone laughing while the view sparkled outside. We’d amble into Castletownbere, just three miles down the road, for fresh crab from the pier or a pint at one of those no-nonsense pubs where the locals spin yarns about fishing hauls. Afternoons were for gentle wanders along the coastal paths – spotting seals bobbing in the bay, the lads skimming stones while we pretended not to notice the odd drizzle.

Evenings brought the real cottage-life joy: board games in one lounge turning into storytelling in another, with the bay turning pink at sunset. There was that one hilarious moment when we tried a full Irish fry-up for eight – pans everywhere, smoke alarms chirping, and me covered in flour like a dishevelled Santa. Pure pandemonium, but the kind that binds you closer. I caught myself one quiet night, staring out at the twinkling lights across the water, thinking how we’d let life’s rush fade into this. No schedules, just us, the sea, and a house that made it all effortless.

It was one of those breaks that resets you – no grand adventures, just family, laughs, and that unbeatable Irish quiet. If you’re after a relaxed escape with your lot, this corner of Cork delivers every time. We’re already plotting a return.
