About Cork
I’ll never forget the drive to Castletownbere – we’d piled into the car in Cork city with the kids buzzing like they’d mainlined sugar, and me navigating via a dodgy phone signal. About halfway, disaster struck: a rogue sheep decided our windscreen was its personal trampoline. No harm done, bar a woolly dent in the bonnet and my husband Dave’s blood pressure spiking through the roof. “Typical Irish welcome,” he muttered, as we laughed it off and pressed on, the anticipation building with every twisty mile. Those Beara Peninsula roads, hugging the coast with glimpses of the Atlantic, had us all grinning like idiots despite the delay.

Pulling up to the place, we were gobsmacked. Tucked into a scenic spot overlooking the colourful jumble of Castletownbere’s town and a hazy slice of sea beyond, this split-level bungalow felt like it was made for us. Up the external stairs we trooped, bags banging, and straight into a cosy living/dining room that hit us with the glow of its electric fire. Plush sofas begged us to flop, and with Sky on the telly, it was unwind central. The dining table could handle most of us, though we ended up spilling into the kitchen/diner for brekkies, squeezing round the smaller table amid cereal spills and toddler tantrums – pure family holiday chaos, and I wouldn’t swap it.

First impressions? Spot on. It was our perfect home-away-from-home for the four of us (alright, six if you count the dog and the in-laws popping over). Mornings kicked off with lazy fry-ups, windows flung open to the salty breeze, then we’d wander down to the harbour. Castletownbere’s a gem for that – fresh fish from the boats, chatting with locals about the day’s catch, and the kids poking at rock pools teeming with crabs. One afternoon, we ambled to Dunboy Castle ruins, just a short stroll away, clambering over ivy-choked walls while I pretended to be a pirate queen. Dave rolled his eyes, but he was loving it, sketching the view like a proper artist.

Evenings were the best bit, though – that cottage life rhythm of simple pleasures. We’d fire up the hob for pasta (nothing fancy, just bog-standard family grub), then pile on the sofas for a movie, feet up, fire crackling. The views from the windows turned magical at dusk, town lights twinkling below. Sure, there was the odd mishap, like the time the youngest smeared jam everywhere, turning the place into a crime scene. But sitting there one night, wine in hand, watching Dave chase the kids round in circles, I had a proper moment. Holidays like this? They’re not about grand adventures; they’re these messy, joyful pockets where you realise family’s the real magic. No filters, no rush – just us, the sea air, and a bungalow that felt like a hug.

We left buzzing to come back, already plotting next time. If you’re after relaxed Beara vibes with your lot, this corner of Cork delivers in spades.
