About Cork
First impressions? Pure magic. This detached cottage is the epitome of a home-away-from-home, done up with that welcoming West Cork charm. Three comfy bedrooms – one with its own en-suite for those lazy lie-ins – and an open-plan living space that’s all about cosying up. The kitchen’s kitted out nicely, dining area flows out to a side patio (brilliant for sunnier spells), and the sitting area by the fire? Heaven. We dumped our bags and lit the fire straight away; the autumn chill was nipping at the windows, turning everything golden outside. West Cork in October is something else – that crisp, misty season where the leaves are turning fiery reds and oranges, and the air smells like damp earth and woodsmoke. It shaped every minute of our stay. Mornings kicked off with porridge and strong coffee, peering out at the harbour views from Baltimore, just a quick spin away, where seals bobbed about in the glassy water, unfazed by the sea mist rolling in. We’d bundle up in woollies and wellies for gentle rambles along the coast path to Castletownshend – all those drumlins glowing in the low sun, stopping for blackberries that were still just about hanging on, tart and perfect for a crumble later. Afternoons were for Skibbereen’s market, where the seasonal shift meant stalls piled high with pumpkins, local cheeses, and apple cider that warmed you from the inside. We’d haggle a bit (Irish-style, all smiles), grab some soda bread, and head back to potter about the cottage. Evenings? Bliss. Fire roaring, stew bubbling on the hob, a drop of Murphy’s from the local – it felt like the whole world was wrapped in that soft, fading light. One night, as the wind howled and rain pattered the roof, I had a proper moment of reflection, staring into the flames. Life back home’s a whirlwind, isn’t it? But here, with the family sprawled about, board games out and no rush, I realised how these quiet, seasonal escapes recharge the soul. No grand plans, just being present in that cosy bubble. We even squeezed in a blustery beach wander at Tragumna, leaves skittering across the sand like confetti, and a pub session in Skibbereen where the fiddles wailed and the fire kept the autumn damp at bay. Leaving felt bittersweet – the trees were shedding their coats, mirroring that gentle melancholy. If you’re after a proper West Cork autumn hug, this is it. We’re already plotting a return. |
