About Cork
I’ll never forget the drive to our holiday cottage near Kealkill in West Cork – a proper Irish adventure from the off. We’d flown into Cork Airport, picked up our hire car, and set off westwards, me glued to Google Maps while my other half navigated the twisty lanes with a cuppa in hand. About halfway, disaster struck: a sudden downpour turned the road into a river, and we skidded into a pothole that felt like it swallowed the wheel whole. Heart in mouth, we pulled over, changed the tyre in the lashing rain (lesson learned: pack better waterproofs next time), and laughed it off as typical British holiday luck – even if we were in Ireland.

By the time we arrived, soaked but buzzing with anticipation, the clouds were parting just enough to tease some blue sky. The cottage was a gem – this attractive detached place right next to the owners’, all cosy and welcoming. Stepping inside, we were hit with that open-plan living-kitchen-dining setup that’s pure genius for a family like ours. No one gets left out while someone’s rustling up supper; it’s all chatter about the day ahead over cups of tea.

First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags, fired up the solid fuel stove, and planned our week around West Cork’s cracking walks. Bantry’s just a short drive away, so we were perfectly placed for hiking heaven. Day one dawned bright – proper good weather – and we tackled the Headroom Horseshoe trail, a moderate loop with killer views over Bantry Bay. The paths were springy underfoot, gorse blooming yellow, and we picnicked by the sea, feeling like we’d cracked the holiday code. I even managed a cheeky selfie with a sheep that photobombed us, which had everyone in stitches back home via WhatsApp.

But oh, the British weather – sorry, Irish edition – had other ideas midweek. Grey skies rolled in overnight, turning our ambitious hike to Knocknagree into a comedy of errors. We set off anyway, hoods up, trudging through squelchy fields near Kealkill. Mud clung to boots like glue, and a cheeky gust nearly bowled me into a ditch. “This is character-building!” I yelled over the wind, secretly wondering if Netflix awaited back at the cottage. We shortened it to a gentle ramble along the bay instead, spotting seals bobbing about, and it turned into one of those perfect soggy memories. Sat by the stove that evening, Smart TV flickering with a film, toes warming, I reflected on how these weather-whipped walks mirrored life a bit – plans go awry, but you adapt, laugh, and come out stronger. No grand epiphanies, just a quiet nod to not sweating the small stuff.

The final day gifted us sun again for a farewell stroll around Bantry’s coastal paths – wildflowers nodding, waves crashing, pure tonic for the soul. West Cork’s walks are brilliant like that: forgiving on good days, testing on the bad, always rewarding. If you’re after a base for foot-powered exploring, this corner’s unbeatable. We drove off gutted to leave, already plotting a return. Fancy it? Pack your wellies.
