About Shoemaker's Rest.

Ardgroom Village is a quaint rural spot between Derryvegal to the west and Cappacloghernane to the east. It's famed for megalithic monuments just east of the village, known as Ardgroom Stone Circle, with more stones to the north. Nearby, enjoy scenic Glenbeg Lough and Cuas Pier Caves. Stock up at Harrington's Grocery and Deli; dine at The Village Inn (traditional pub fare), Josie's Lakeview House in Lauragh, or Coffee Dock in Eyeries. Easily reach South Allihies for Allihies Copper Mine Museum, Children of Lir Gravesite, and Ballydonegan Beach.

About Cork
I’ll never forget the drive to Ardgroom on the Beara Peninsula – that winding road from Cork had us gripping the wheel like it was a rollercoaster. We’d set off full of beans, dreaming of cosy evenings by the fire, but about halfway there, disaster struck: a rogue sheep decided our hire car was its personal scratching post. No harm done, just a bit of woolly fluff on the bumper and me laughing so hard I nearly missed the turn. Still, it broke the ice, and by the time we rolled into the quaint village, anticipation was buzzing – this was our first proper getaway as a couple in ages, no kids, just us and the dog.

Pulling up to the holiday home, we were gobsmacked. It’s this newly renovated four-bedder right in the heart of the village, all tastefully done with vibrant interiors that scream “relax here”. Perfect for eight, but just us two plus our little terrier, Monty, who wasted no time claiming a rug. The views? Stunning countryside rolling out to the river – we stood there gawping, tea in hand, thinking we’d struck gold.

First impressions didn’t disappoint. We dumped the bags and headed straight to the nearby pub for a pint – it’s literally a stone’s throw, as is the shop-deli stocked with local cheeses and fresh bread. Back home, the kitchen was a dream: fully kitted out, we rustled up pasta with stuff from the deli, no faffing about. Dinner round the big table felt proper indulgent, then we flopped on the sofa, Monty snoring beside us, flicking on the Smart TV for a cheesy rom-com. The woodburning stove crackled away, turning the lot into a hug in room form.

Next morning, we embraced full cottage chaos – Monty barking at nothing, me spilling coffee while trying to make soda bread (disaster, but hilarious). We wandered the village paths, spotting sheep that weren’t suicidal this time, then a gentle riverside stroll, hand in hand, breathing in that crisp Irish air. Afternoons were lazy: reading on the terrace with those epic views, popping to the deli for picnic bits, or nipping to the pub for live trad music one evening – nothing fancy, just fiddles and craic that had us tapping our feet.

One highlight was a rainy hike up to the local pier, about a mile off – we got soaked, but laughing about it over hot chocolate back home was pure magic. It made me reflect a bit: life’s been mad with work lately, and we’d forgotten how simple pleasures like this recharge the batteries. No grand plans, just us pottering about, cooking daft meals, and letting the peninsula’s quiet magic do its thing.

By week’s end, we were hooked on that relaxed rhythm – the chaos of spilled flour, dog hair everywhere, and views that made worries vanish. If you’re after a chilled couple’s break in Cork’s Beara, this spot’s a gem. We’re already plotting a return.
