About Cork
I’ll never forget the drive down to that lovely farmhouse near Bandon in Cork – it was mid-autumn, you see, with those golden leaves swirling like confetti in the wind, and me cursing under my breath because the sat-nav decided to play silly buggers just as the sun dipped low. We’d taken a wrong turn onto some narrow boreen, the kind that feels like it’s leading to Narnia, and ended up reversing into a hedge while a farmer on a tractor chuckled from afar. Typical me, always one for a dramatic entrance, but honestly, it just added to the anticipation bubbling up as we finally spotted the place nestled in the countryside.

Pulling up, my heart did a little flip – there it was, this charming old property dating back to 1740, part of a traditional farmhouse that’s been tastefully done up with real character. Stepping inside, we were hit with the cosiest first impressions: an attractive sitting room complete with an open fire crackling away, antique furniture that begged you to flop down, and those snug bedrooms offering cracking views over the garden and the rolling hills beyond, all bathed in that soft, hazy autumn light. It felt like slipping into a hug from an old friend, especially with the season turning the air crisp and the trees outside a riot of amber and red.

Autumn shaped every bit of our stay, didn’t it? Mornings started with mist clinging to the fields like a lazy duvet, perfect for a slow breather on the garden bench with a steaming mug of tea, watching the dew sparkle before the sun burned it off. We’d wander the nearby paths – nothing too strenuous, just gentle loops around local farms where blackberries hung heavy on the bushes, begging to be picked for a crumble later. One afternoon, we drove the short hop to Bandon’s market, stocking up on seasonal spuds, apple cider, and those fat pumpkins that screamed Halloween carving session back at the farmhouse. The coastline’s just a quick jaunt away too – think Garrettstown Beach with its dunes turning golden under weak October sun, waves crashing dramatically as gulls wheeled overhead. We crunched along the shore, boots sinking into damp sand, feeling properly alive in that bracing sea air that nips at your cheeks just right.

Evenings were pure magic, thanks to the season’s early dark. We’d light that open fire, hunker down with a stew bubbling on the hob (nothing fancy, just hearty Cork fare with local butter and herbs), and play cards till our eyelids drooped. One night, a gentle rain pattered on the windows, turning the countryside views misty and mysterious – I caught myself staring out, mug in hand, reflecting on how I’d been run ragged by city life lately. This getaway, wrapped in autumn’s cosy embrace, was just what I needed: a reminder to slow down, breathe deep, and let the world’s colours do the talking.

We left feeling recharged, cheeks rosy from the chill, hearts full from the simple joys. If you’re chasing that perfect seasonal escape in Cork, hunt out a spot like this – it’ll weave its spell on you too.
