About Cork
I’ll never forget the drive to our little holiday spot in West Cork – a proper adventure that started with a classic Irish downpour just as we left the main road. It was mid-autumn, you see, that magical shoulder season when the leaves are turning all fiery shades of orange and red, but the weather can’t make up its mind. We’d been buzzing with anticipation, imagining cosy evenings by a fire after days of exploring, but then the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly, directing us down a narrow lane that turned into a muddy quagmire. Cue me, white-knuckled on the wheel, muttering about renting a tractor next time, while my other half laughed and snapped photos of sheep looking as bemused as we felt. Twenty minutes of sliding about later, we emerged, grinning like idiots, into the sun-dappled Mealagh Valley.

Pulling up to the property – a charming south-facing cottage tucked away in the peaceful townland of Dromsultan, just a cheeky 10-minute drive northeast of Bantry – our first impressions were spot on. The valley views stretched out like a painting, all golden bracken and mist-shrouded hills, with that crisp autumn air that smells of damp earth and promise. It felt like we’d stumbled into a secret world, perfect for unwinding without the summer crowds.

Autumn shaped every minute of our stay, turning the ordinary into something special. Mornings began with breakfast on the patio, wrapped in blankets, watching the valley wake up under a soft fog that burned off to reveal blue skies. We’d set off for gentle walks along the nearby trails – nothing too strenuous, mind, as the ground was carpeted in slick leaves and the odd sneaky puddle. One day, we hiked up to a viewpoint overlooking the river, crunching through fallen acorns, and spotted a red squirrel darting about, its tail like a fluffy question mark. The season’s mellow light was a dream for my amateur photography efforts; every hedgerow bursting with berries, every stream sparkling like it was lit from within.

Afternoons meant pottering into Bantry, no more than a quick spin away, for fresh scones and a wander around the market stalls heaving with seasonal treats – pumpkins, crab apples, and jars of blackberry jam that tasted like hedgerow heaven. Back at the cottage, we’d light the fire as the days shortened, the flames dancing shadows on the walls while we sipped tea and planned stargazing. Autumn nights there are something else; with the valley so dark and still, the sky unfurled like a velvet blanket studded with stars. We lay out on rugs one evening, necks craned, spotting shooting stars and pondering life’s big questions – or at least, where we’d parked the car.

It got me reflecting, really, on how we rush about the rest of the year. There I was, city-bred me, mesmerised by the simple rhythm of rustling leaves and changing light, feeling properly grounded for the first time in ages. A minor mishap at the start, sure, but this autumn retreat in the Mealagh Valley? Pure magic. If you’re after that quiet reset, go now, before winter claims it all.
