About Cork
We dumped the bags and headed straight for the kitchen, stomachs rumbling. The property’s well-stocked setup was a godsend – fresh eggs from a local farm delivery, bread from Bantry’s market that morning. I fancied myself a chef, rustling up bacon and soda farls for brunch. The kids cheered, though my attempt at colcannon was more mash than masterpiece; lumpy as my DIY puncture fix. Still, slathered in butter, it hit the spot, with views over the valley making it taste gourmet. Next day, we hit Bantry Market – what a gem. Stalls groaning under artisan cheeses, smoked fish, and jars of wild garlic pesto. I loaded up on crab claws and wheaten bread, haggling like a pro (well, trying to). Back at the house, lunch was a feast: crab salad with lemon mayo, paired with a sneaky Guinness from the stash we’d grabbed. The afternoon? A gentle stroll to one of the nearby pubs, The Herons Cove, just down the road. Proper Irish hospitality – we squeezed into a corner table, ordered fish and chips that were crisp and flaky, mushy peas on the side. The pint of Murphy’s was smooth as silk, and the banter with locals about the weather (eternal rain chat) had us in stitches. Evenings were for experimenting. One night, I tackled a stew with market lamb, carrots, and Guinness – slow-cooked on the hob while we played cards. Turned out hearty and warming, though I overdid the thyme and spent half dinner picking leaves off my teeth. Self-reflection moment: holidays like this remind me I’m no MasterChef, but there’s joy in the faffing. The kids loved it, declaring it “better than takeaways,” which warmed my cockles more than the stew. Last full day, we ambled to another local spot, Organico Café in town for elevenses – sourdough toasties with Dingle cheddar that melted dreamily. Dinner back home? A seafood medley from the market’s fresh catch, simply grilled with garlic butter. Pub crawl finale at Blair’s Cove, overlooking the bay – oysters that slid down like silk, followed by beef and Guinness pie. We rolled home stuffed, content. That stay was pure foodie bliss, all within a stone’s throw. Markets, pubs, kitchen triumphs and flops – it’s the taste of Cork that lingers longest. Can’t wait to go back. |
