About County Donegal
I’ll never forget the drive up to our holiday cottage in County Donegal – or rather, the near-disaster that kicked it off. We’d piled into the car in Derry, full of beans after a fry-up breakfast, sat-nav chirping away like it knew best. But oh no, about halfway along the twisty Wild Atlantic Way, the heavens opened. I’m talking biblical rain, the kind that turns narrow lanes into rivers. Cue me white-knuckling the wheel while my mate Dave in the passenger seat fiddled with the map app, yelling “left here!” just as we splashed through a massive puddle. Splashback hit the windscreen like a tidal wave, and suddenly we’re crawling along, wipers on full whack, laughing hysterically because what else can you do? Poor kids in the back were soaked from a quick loo stop gone wrong, and I’d somehow managed to spill half my coffee down my shirt. Proper comedy of errors.

By the time we crested the hill into Kilmacloo, just a quick hop from Creeslough village, the rain had eased to a dramatic mist, unveiling these jaw-dropping views of Muckish and Errigal mountains. Heart-skipping stuff – I pulled over for a sneaky photo, anticipation bubbling up like I was arriving at some secret paradise. And there it was: this serene little cottage, all welcoming and tucked away peacefully. We tumbled out, soggy and giggling, lugging bags like a pack of drowned rats. The owners had left us a proper treat – fresh homemade scones and some seasonal jam on the doorstep. Classy touch that instantly melted away the chaos.

Stepping inside was pure magic. The open-plan space hit you first: a cracking kitchen-diner that screamed “cook up a storm here,” with everything you’d need for family feasts. Next door, the sitting room beckoned with its plush sofa and armchairs – I flopped straight onto one, remote in hand, dreaming of telly after our mad dash. It felt accessible and cosy, perfect for us lot, no faffing about. First impressions? Spot on. The views from the windows alone had us glued, mountains brooding under patchy skies like something out of a postcard.

We didn’t waste time – a quick change into dry clothes, scones demolished with tea, and we were off for a gentle wander. Creeslough’s just 1.3 miles down the road, so we ambled over to the pier, waves crashing wildly, seals popping up like nosy neighbours. Picked up fresh fish from a local van for dinner – nothing beats that simplicity. Back at the cottage, we cooked up, kids played cards by the fire (well, imagined one, it was electric but spot on), and I had one of those quiet moments staring out at Errigal. You know, the kind where you think, “Blimey, I’m always rushing about at home – this is what recharging looks like.” A bit of self-reflection never hurt, eh? No grand adventures needed; the arrival mishaps just made the peace hit harder.

Honestly, if you’re after a tranquil Wild Atlantic Way escape, this corner of Donegal delivers. Rain, spills and all, it was the perfect reset. Can’t wait to go back – minus the coffee incident.
