About County Donegal
I’ll never forget the drive up to Letterkenny – we’d packed the car to the gills with wellies, board games, and enough cheese toasties for a siege, only for the sat-nav to chuck a wobbly just outside Derry. It rerouted us down some narrow boreen that had me white-knuckling the wheel, convinced we’d end up in a bog. But as we crested the hill into town, the anticipation bubbled up – those rolling green hills, the promise of proper Irish craic, and a cosy bolt-hole waiting for us. First impressions? Spot on. Pulled up to this cracking pet-friendly house that screamed “kick back and stay a while”.

Stepping inside felt like slipping into a favourite jumper. We ditched our muddy shoes in the hallway (the dog thought it was playtime and scattered them everywhere – classic chaos), then flopped straight into the sitting room. Two squishy sofas and a comfy armchair by the open fire? Heaven. We lit it up that first evening, flames crackling away while we cracked open a couple of tins, the dog snoring at our feet. It’s the sort of place perfect for a family or mates, everything you need without the faff.

The kitchen-dining setup was a dream for self-catering – stocked with pots, pans, and that massive fridge we stuffed with local bits from the nearby Supervalu. No gourmet pretensions here; we rustled up spuds roasted with rosemary from the garden patch (or was it weeds? Who cares), washed down with tea so strong it’d stand a spoon. Mornings meant lazy brekkies, faffing about with toast and bacon, the kind of unhurried rhythm you crave on holiday.

We kept it dead local, wandering into Letterkenny’s high street for coffee at a quirky café – the barista even slipped the dog a treat. Popped into the leisure centre pool one drizzly afternoon for a splash about, then back for firelit evenings with cards and yarns. One night, we hiked the easy trail up to the castle ruins just a short stroll away, wind whipping our cheeks, laughing at how the dog chased phantom sheep. Simple stuff, but it hit the spot – that cottage life buzz where plans dissolve into pottering.

There was this gentle moment of reflection on the second evening, staring into the fire as rain pattered the windows. Me and the missus, empty nesters now, realising how these getaways remind you what matters: warmth, each other, and not giving a toss about the laundry piling up. No epic adventures needed; just this unpretentious house, a stone’s throw from pubs and shops, wrapping us in that relaxed Donegal magic. If you’re after a chilled couple’s break with a dash of family-friendly disorder, this is your spot. We’re already plotting a return – sat-nav glitches be damned.
