About County Kerry
I’ll never forget the drive to our holiday cottage in County Kerry – we’d been buzzing with excitement about escaping to Ireland’s southwest, but of course, I managed to take a wrong turn just outside Killarney. Picture this: me, squinting at the satnav while my wife sighs dramatically, and us ending up on a narrow lane that dead-ended at a sheep farm. “Typical,” she said with a grin, as we reversed past a flock giving us evils. Twenty minutes later, we were back on track, hearts racing a bit more than planned, but the anticipation built as those lush green hills rolled by.

Pulling up three miles from Beaufort village, our first impressions were spot on. This beautifully presented cottage, just a stone’s throw from Killarney’s buzz but tucked away in Kerry’s delightful peace, looked like a hug in property form. Contemporary and spacious inside, it was perfect for us two – four superb bedrooms with en-suites (plenty of room for guests if we fancied), plus a bathroom boasting a Jacuzzi bath that screamed relaxation. The large sitting area had a welcoming open fire, and the dining spot featured a woodburning stove. Outside, a lawned garden with furniture begged for alfresco dinners, those far-reaching views to the Dingle Peninsula mountains making it all the more magical.

We wasted no time diving into cottage life. First morning, I fumbled brewing tea on the Aga-like stove, nearly setting off the smoke alarm – chaos in the kitchen, but we laughed it off with buttery scones from the local Beaufort shop. A gentle stroll to the village revealed a cosy pub where we grabbed fish and chips, chatting with locals about the weather (always a safe bet in Ireland). Afternoons were for ambling along the nearby Kerry Way trails – nothing too strenuous, just enough to work up an appetite, with views of sparkling lakes and heather-clad hills that made you breathe deeper.

Evenings? Pure bliss. We’d light the fire, sink into the plush sofas with a glass of wine, and let the Jacuzzi work its wonders after a day’s potter. One night, watching the sun dip behind the mountains from the garden, I had a quiet moment of reflection – mid-forties, no kids yet, just us rediscovering that easy rhythm we’d lost in daily grind. It hit me: these simple pleasures, like sharing a damp walk or burning toast together, are what keep the spark alive. No grand adventures needed; Kerry’s gentle chaos was spot on for recharging.

A quick jaunt into Killarney let us sneak in a gander at Muckross House gardens – wildflowers everywhere, perfect for hand-holding and ice creams. Back at the cottage, we’d cook up pasta, spill sauce on the tablecloth, and flop by the stove. It was all about that unhurried vibe: rain pattering on the roof one minute, blue skies the next. Leaving felt bittersweet, but Kerry’s got us hooked – we’re already plotting a return for more of that cosy, chaotic magic.
