About County Kerry
I’ll never forget the drive to our holiday spot in County Kerry – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from Killarney turned into a comedy of errors thanks to my hopeless sense of direction. We’d rented a car at the airport, and I, ever the confident navigator, insisted on using an old paper map instead of the sat-nav. Big mistake. Halfway there, we missed a turning onto the narrow back road, ended up splashing through a puddle the size of a small lake, and coated the windscreen in mud. My other half was not amused, wiping the glass with a soggy tissue while muttering about modern technology. By the time we spotted the gates, we were late, a bit frazzled, and I was promising never to play captain again. Still, as we crunched up the gravel drive, that knot of anticipation in my stomach started to unravel into pure excitement.

Pulling up to this grand old place nestled amidst Kerry’s enchanting landscape – a historic listed building dating back to 1742, set within its own sixty-eight-acre private estate – it was love at first sight. The building just exudes timeless elegance and refined luxury, like stepping into a period drama without the corsets. We were greeted by the warmest welcome from the hosts, who handed us glasses of chilled elderflower fizz to steady our nerves after the road debacle. Our rooms were pure bliss: high ceilings, plush beds that swallowed you whole, and views over rolling green hills that made you forget the world outside.

First impressions? Overwhelmingly brilliant. We dumped the bags and headed straight out for a gentle wander around the estate. The gardens are a dream – manicured lawns sweeping down to a serene lake where swans glided about like they owned the place. We even spotted a few red deer grazing in the distance, which felt like our own private National Geographic moment. Laughter bubbled up as we recounted the muddy drive over tea on the terrace, the sun dipping low and painting everything golden. It was one of those times you realise how daft it is to stress over little hiccups when paradise is waiting just around the bend.

The next morning, we ventured into nearby Killarney National Park, only a stone’s throw away, for a proper Irish welcome: a misty hike along the Old Kenmare Road, breathing in that crisp, pine-scented air. Lunch was simple perfection at a cosy spot in town – fresh seafood chowder and soda bread that melted in your mouth. Back at the manor, lazy afternoons melted into evenings by the fire, swapping stories with fellow guests. I had a quiet moment of self-reflection there, staring into the flames: life’s too short for map mishaps and worries; it’s the unexpected detours that lead to the best views.

Honestly, if you’re after a holiday that blends luxury with that raw Kerry magic, this is it. Our chaotic arrival only made the magic hit harder – proof that even a bumpy start can end in the loveliest memories. Can’t wait to go back.
