About Galway
I’ll never forget the drive to our little holiday cottage near Carna in Galway – we’d piled into the car in Dublin full of sandwiches and high spirits, only for the sat-nav to chuck us down a narrow, winding lane that turned into a boggy track after a sudden downpour. Cue me, white-knuckled on the wheel, muttering about Irish hospitality starting with a free car wash, while the kids in the back cheered every splash like it was a water park. But as we crested the hill, there it was: this characterful cottage, ideally suited to families and friends looking to explore the Wild Atlantic Way, with a generous garden begging for summer barbies and a charming wood burner for cosier nights. First impressions? Magic. The sea air hit us like a tonic, and that pier less than 700 metres away promised endless adventures.

We’d arrived buzzing with plans for epic hikes along the coast, dreaming of those Wild Atlantic Way trails with cliffs plunging into the Atlantic and seals popping up like nosy neighbours. Galway’s weather, though – classic British holiday luck, even in Ireland – had other ideas. Day one dawned bright, so we legged it to the pier for an invigorating walk, the dramatic coastal scenery unfolding like a postcard. Waves crashed below, gulls wheeled overhead, and we clambered over rocks, spotting puffins in the distance. The kids darted ahead, turning every puddle into a pirate lagoon, and I felt that rare parental glow of everyone actually getting fresh air without screens.

Come afternoon, the sky turned moody, wind whipping in from the west like it had a personal grudge. Our big hike to the headland got binned – visibility down to nought, rain lashing sideways. Instead, we pivoted to a sheltered coastal path closer to the cottage, hoods up, laughing as we battled the gale. It was proper bracing stuff, the kind that leaves your cheeks glowing and your soul singing. We huddled under umbrellas, sharing hot chocolate from a flask, and stumbled on a hidden cove where the waves roared like dragons. Hilarious moment: I slipped on wet seaweed, landing bum-first in a rockpool. The family howled, and I played it cool with a soggy “character-building experience!”

Next day, blue skies returned, teasing us out for a longer ramble along the cliffs. The path twisted through boggy fields dotted with wildflowers, offering views that stopped you in your tracks – endless ocean, rugged stacks rising like ancient sentinels. We even saw a pod of dolphins arcing through the surf, pure joy. But by evening, fog rolled in thick as pea soup, scrapping our sunset stroll. Cosy night in by the wood burner it was, toasting marshmallows and plotting tomorrow’s route.

Looking back, those weather whims were the best bit. They forced us to adapt, turning potential washouts into intimate family legends. Galway’s coast doesn’t do predictable – it’s wild, raw, and utterly addictive. If you fancy walks that range from exhilarating sunlit strides to hilarious gales, this spot’s your haven. We left windswept, wiser, and already plotting a return.
