About Galway
I’ll never forget the drive to our holiday spot near Clonbur in Galway – a proper Irish jaunt that started with me taking a wrong turn just outside Ballinrobe, thanks to my dodgy sat-nav and a sudden downpour that turned the windscreen into a blur. We ended up looping through some narrow lanes lined with sheep eyeing us suspiciously, but honestly, it just built the anticipation. By the time we crested that final hill, hearts racing a bit, there it was: this cracking dormer bungalow perched with jaw-dropping views over Lough Mask. First impressions? Pure magic – the kind that makes you exhale and think, “Yep, we’ve arrived somewhere special.”

It’s the sort of place that sleeps ten comfortably, perfect for our two families tagging along with the kids and our two daft dogs in tow. Detached and snug, it’s got that welcoming vibe, surrounded by lakes, streams, woodlands, and those moody mountains begging for a gentle wander – or not, as it turned out. Just four miles down the road lies the stunning beach at Lough Na Fooey, where we did fancy a lazy picnic one afternoon, toes in the sand and a dip in those crystal-clear waters. But let’s be honest, the real joy was doing sod all.

We’d flop into the garden first thing, mugs of tea in hand, watching mist roll off the lough like a scene from a postcard. The kids would chase the dogs around for five minutes before conking out with a book or a gadget, and us adults? Blissful inertia. I spent hours parked in a lounger, nose in a battered paperback – some light thriller I’d been meaning to crack for months. No rush, no schedules, just the rustle of leaves and the occasional cry of a bird. One morning, I even managed a full chapter without interruption, which felt like a personal triumph. The garden’s a dream for that – wildish but private, with spots to sprawl and let the world slow right down.

There was gentle self-reflection too, staring out at the water. I caught myself thinking how I never switch off at home – always ticking off lists, scrolling endlessly. Here, time stretched like toffee. We’d potter to the stream for a bit, skim stones maybe, or just sit listening to it babble. Evenings were for lazy barbecues (weather permitting – ha, Ireland!), followed by board games that dissolved into giggles and early beds. No grand hikes or fishing epics for us; we left that for the outdoorsy mates this place suits so well. Instead, it was the sheer luxury of lingering – over breakfasts that dragged into brunch, naps in the afternoon sun, and those views that made every cuppa taste better.

Looking back, that week of deliberate dawdling was the best medicine. In a world that spins too fast, this bungalow was our perfect pause button. If you’re after recharging without the faff, book it – you won’t regret a thing.
