About Galway
First impressions? Blimey, they didn’t disappoint. Tucked away in the rural hills, this detached holiday home welcomed us with its expansive wrap-around lawn, already dusted with the first hints of dew underfoot. The views across the countryside were breathtaking, especially in the soft autumn light, with hedges heavy with berries and distant fields fading into misty purples. Inside, it felt like a proper home-from-home: four well-appointed bedrooms that sorted us and the kids (and the in-laws) no bother, and that woodburning stove in the sitting room just begging to be lit. We crossed the threshold, dumped the bags, and within minutes had a fire crackling – pure bliss after the chill outside. Autumn shaped every bit of our stay, turning it into something straight out of a postcard. Mornings kicked off with mist clinging to the valleys, perfect for wrapping up in scarves and heading out for gentle walks along the nearby lanes. We’d crunch through fallen leaves, spotting the odd red squirrel darting about, and pick blackberries that were plump and juicy from the season’s bounty – turned them into a crumble that night, naturally. The air had that earthy, damp smell you only get in Irish autumn, invigorating but not freezing, urging us to explore without the summer crowds. Afternoons were for pottering around Williamstown, just a few miles away – nipping into the local shop for fresh soda bread and chatting with folks who knew every hedgerow story. One day, we timed it for the harvest vibes at a nearby farm, watching tractors rumble in with tatties, the fields alive with that golden-hour sheen. Evenings drew us back to the stove, mugs of tea in hand, playing board games as rain pattered softly on the windows – the kind of weather that makes you grateful for a snug retreat. No rushing about; just that slow, seasonal rhythm. Looking back, I had a quiet moment one foggy morning, standing on the lawn with coffee in hand, watching the sun burn through the haze. Life back home feels frantic, but out here, autumn stripped it all down – reminded me to savour the simple stuff, like the warmth of family and a good fire. We left feeling recharged, already plotting a return for next year’s colours. If you’re after a proper Irish countryside hug, this is it. |
