About Galway
I’ll never forget the drive to Cleggan – we’d left Galway early, buzzing with that holiday anticipation, windows down and the radio blasting some cheesy Irish tunes. Me and Sarah, just the two of us for a proper unwind after months of kids’ school runs and work deadlines. The sat-nav was doing its thing along those twisty Connemara roads, all lush green hills and sheep dodging out the way, when disaster struck: a rogue flock decided to stage a sit-in right in the middle of the lane. Cue 20 minutes of gentle honking and me hopping out with a bag of crisps to bribe them off. Classic me, turning a scenic drive into a farmer’s farce. We laughed it off, though – nothing kills the vibe like sheep-induced chaos.

Pulling into the village, my heart did a little flip. Cleggan’s this postcard-perfect fishing spot, harbour bobbing with colourful boats, and there was our semi-detached cottage, right on the edge, backing straight onto the sea. Yards from the quay, mind – first impressions? Magic. We tumbled out the car, bags everywhere, and flung open the door to this light, airy haven. Three bedrooms – two doubles with those jaw-dropping sea views that make you stare like a lemon, a twin we didn’t need, and a ground-floor bathroom for lazy mornings. The open-plan living space was the star: comfy sofas, doors onto the gravel garden where you could practically taste the salt air, a kitchen stocked for all sorts, and a dining spot perfect for lingering over breakfast.

We wasted no time settling in. First evening, we wandered down to the harbour, watching the fishermen haul in the day’s catch – crab and lobster, fresh as you like. Popped into Lowry’s pub for a pint and some chowder that warmed us right through; the locals were dead chatty, swapping stories about Atlantic storms. Back at the cottage, we cracked open a bottle of wine on the garden, waves crashing below, seals popping up like nosy neighbours. Pure bliss, that simple sea symphony.

Next day, we kept it low-key – a gentle clifftop walk along the coast path to nearby Dog’s Bay, those white sands glowing under the sun. I faffed about with my phone trying to capture it, but Sarah just plonked down with a book and a flask of tea. Cottage life at its finest: me burning toast in the well-equipped kitchen (twice), her salvaging it with a grin, then sprawling on the sofa with the doors wide, reading the paper and dozing to the rhythm of the tide. There was that one hilarious moment when a gust whipped the washing off the line into the garden – cue us scrambling like Keystone Cops, laughing till we cried. Amid the gentle mayhem, I had a quiet think: when did we last switch off like this? No schedules, no screens (much), just us and the sea. It’s the small stuff – shared glances over coffee, hand-holding on the harbour wall – that recharges the soul.

By the end of our stay, Cleggan had wormed its way into our hearts. That cottage wasn’t just a holiday let; it was a reset button. If you’re after relaxed days, sea views, and a bit of joyful disorder, this is your spot. We’re already plotting a return.
