About Galway
I’ll never forget the drive to our holiday spot near Ballinderreen in County Galway – it was one of those journeys that started with high hopes and quickly turned into a comedy of errors. We’d piled into the car in Dublin after a cracking breakfast, buzzing with anticipation about escaping to the west coast for a proper unwind. The sat-nav promised a smooth three-hour scoot, but oh no, not on our watch. First, we hit roadworks just past Athlone, turning the motorway into a snail-paced car park. Then, my mate Dave – who fancies himself a navigator – insisted on a ‘shortcut’ through some back lanes that ended up being narrower than a diet resolution. We scraped the wing mirror on a hedge (sorry, rental company), and by the time we spotted the first signs for Kilcolgan, we were frazzled, parched, and arguing over whose playlist was worse.

Pulling up to this lovely semi-detached apartment on the outskirts of Ballinderreen felt like stumbling into a hug after a rough day. It’s one of two cosy spots tucked away in a quiet corner, perfect for mates or a small family craving peace – and boy, did we need it after that drive. Stepping through the front door, we were hit with this massive open-plan room that just screamed relaxation. There’s a well-equipped kitchen begging for fry-up experiments, a dining bar with comfy chairs for lazy chats, and a sitting area that pulls you in like an old friend. Upstairs, two delightful bedrooms with cracking water views – one double for the lovebirds (or in our case, the snorers), a twin for the rest – plus a family bathroom that’s spotless and straightforward.

First impressions? Absolute gold dust. We dumped the bags, cracked open a few tins from the offie in Kilcolgan (just a couple of miles down the road), and flopped onto the sofas, watching the light dance on the water outside. The anticipation on the drive had me picturing rainy Irish misery, but this place delivered instant calm – no traffic hum, just birds and the odd cow mooing in the distance. We wandered down to nearby Kinvara later that afternoon, barely two miles away, for a pint at a trad pub and some fresh oysters that were so good I nearly proposed to the plate. The next morning, we ambled along the coastal path to Dunguaire Castle, its fairy-tale towers looming over the bay like something out of a storybook, and felt the stress melt away.

Looking back, that chaotic arrival was the perfect setup – a reminder that holidays aren’t about flawless plans, but the joy of landing somewhere that makes you breathe easier. I caught myself staring out the bedroom window one evening, mug of tea in hand, thinking how we city folk forget what quiet really means. A gentle nudge to slow down, isn’t it? If you’re after a Galway getaway that’s low-key bliss, this spot’s a gem. We left recharged, already plotting a return – minus Dave’s shortcuts, mind.
