About Galway
Stepping inside, we were hit with that large kitchen-diner – French doors begging for morning coffees on the rear patio. It was the heart of the place, and boy, did it fuel our food-focused holiday. We’d stocked up en route at a little market in Woodford, grabbing fresh soda bread, crumbly cheeses, and plump local tomatoes that smelled like summer. First night, I fancied myself a chef, rustling up a stew with lamb from the butcher’s – tender cuts that fell apart after a slow simmer on the hob. Dave cracked open a stout, and we devoured it in the bright sitting room by the woodburning stove, plates balanced on knees, proper caveman style. It was messy, delicious, and way better than any restaurant. Next morning, patio coffee in hand, we plotted pub crawls over maps stained with butter from breakfast scones. A short hop to Woodford revealed gems like the Old Barracks, where we tucked into hearty fish and chips – crispy batter hiding flaky cod straight from nearby waters, with mushy peas that transported me back to chippy nights as a kid. Washed down with a pint of Galway Hooker, it hit the spot. Lunch? We stumbled on a farmers’ market just a mile or so away, haggling (badly) for smoked salmon and wheaten bread. Back at the barn, my “gourmet” attempt at salmon salads ended in laughter – too much vinegar, not enough chill – but it tasted brilliant with lake views. Evenings blurred into pub perfection. The Village Inn, minutes down the lane, served up platters of oysters from Lough Derg, briny and fresh, followed by beef and Guinness pie that had us moaning in delight. One night, after too many whiskies, I had a quiet moment on the patio, staring at the stars, reflecting on how these simple meals – shared, sloppy, soul-warming – beat fancy dining every time. No pretence, just good grub and better company. We left fatter, happier, and already plotting a return. If you’re after a spot where food, pubs, and a cracking kitchen make the holiday, this Galway barn’s your ticket. Sláinte! |
