About Galway
I’ll never forget the drive to Claddaghduff – we’d been buzzing with excitement about our little getaway, but halfway there, the sat-nav decided to throw a proper wobbly. It sent us on a wild detour down some narrow Connemara lane that felt more like a sheep track, with the rain lashing the windscreen and me clutching the map like it was a lifeline. “Are we lost or on an adventure?” my partner laughed, and honestly, by the time we spotted the sea, it felt like both. But pulling up to that delightful detached cottage on the Wild Atlantic Way? Pure magic. The panoramic coastal views hit us first – waves crashing below, the Atlantic stretching out forever. We were grinning like kids.

It’s this traditional but homely spot, just a five-minute wander from the village shops, a cosy pub, and the beach. Perfect for us, a family couple escaping the daily grind with our two lads. No fancy bells and whistles, just comfortable chaos: three ground-floor doubles (one with its own en-suite), plus two family rooms upstairs with king-size beds and singles for the boys. Two bathrooms kept the peace – one for a long soak after tramping about.

First morning, we cracked open the windows to that salty breeze and headed straight to the beach. Claddaghduff’s sands are wild and empty, perfect for skimming stones and building lopsided castles that the tide claimed by lunch. The boys chased each other with seaweed swords while we flopped on the dunes, sipping thermos tea. Simple pleasures, eh? Lunch was fish and chips from the shop, eaten picnic-style overlooking the bay – grease and all, but who cares when the views are this good?

Afternoons blurred into pub crawls – well, one pub, really, the Streamstown Bay House, where the Guinness flows and the locals spin yarns about selkies. We’d wander back as the sun dipped, the cottage glowing golden. Evenings were cottage life at its messiest: board games turning competitive (Monopoly ended in mock tears), pasta on the go, and collapsing into those comfy beds with the sound of waves lullabying us. One night, I burned the toast spectacularly – black as Connemara peat – and we howled laughing over it with cups of tea. Proper family bonding.

I had a quiet moment one evening, sitting on the patio as the lads played cards inside. Staring at the horizon, I thought about how we rush about back home, always chasing the next thing. Here, it was just us, the sea, and no agenda. No screens, just stories and soggy walks. That’s the joy of a Claddaghduff break – it strips it all back to what matters. We left with sandy shoes, fuller hearts, and already plotting a return. If you’re after relaxed coastal bliss, this is your spot. Sláinte!
