The seaside village of Tully is situated on the Renvyle Peninsula in County Galway. Set next to the Atlantic Ocean, the village has two bars, a Post Office, a supermarket and a horse-riding centre, as well as a music house. About Galway
I’ll never forget the drive to our little holiday spot on the Renvyle Peninsula – we’d taken a wrong turn just outside Clifden, ending up on a narrow lane that seemed to lead straight into the Atlantic. Heart in my mouth, I reversed for what felt like miles while my mate Dave laughed like a drain, insisting it was “character-building”. But as we finally crested the hill two miles past Tully village, there it was: this delightful detached cottage perched on an elevated site, gazing out over the ocean where the sea wall tames the spring tides. First impressions? Magic. Cosy as a hug, with three comfy bedrooms that screamed family getaway, a well-fitted kitchen for rustling up suppers, and a sitting room with an open fire perfect for a cheeky glass of wine at dusk. I was buzzing already.

No sooner had we unpacked than we wandered down to Tully for supplies, and that’s when the real fun kicked off. First up was Seamus, the chap behind the counter at the tiny village shop – wild white hair, tweed cap, and a grin wider than the bay. “Yer man from London, are ya?” he twinkled, eyeing our accents. “Don’t worry, the fairies won’t steal yer socks here, but mind the banshees after dark!” We chuckled, stocking up on soda bread and local cheese, while he regaled us with tales of smuggling poitin back in the day. Proper yarn-spinner, Seamus was; had us in stitches about the time a cow wandered into the pub during a storm.

Next day, we hit the beach at Dog’s Bay – those white sands are unreal – and bumped into Mary, a local artist with paint-splattered wellies and a dog called Paddy who’d fetch anything but sticks. “Sure, the sea’s paintin’ the sky today,” she said, nodding at the clouds scudding over Connemara. Over thermos tea, she shared how she’d once chased a seal back into the waves with her sketchpad. “They’ve got more personality than half the tourists!” We spent an hour chatting about her quirky portraits of lobster fishermen, her laugh echoing like the waves. Felt like we’d known her forever.

Evenings back at the cottage were golden, fire crackling as we swapped stories. One night, old Tommy from the farm next door popped by with fresh eggs – “For the city folk, before ya starve on yer fancy pasta!” He plonked himself down, regaling us with how the peninsula’s tides once “swallowed a tractor whole” during a big spring. His eyes lit up like a kid’s, mimicking the farmer’s panic. We cracked open the wine, and before long, he was teaching us a jig on the spot.

Looking back, it wasn’t the views or the walks that made it – though they were cracking – it was these characters, the quirky souls who turn a holiday into something alive. Made me reflect on how we rush about back home; out there, time slows, and a natter with a stranger feels like the best bit. If you’re after proper Irish craic, head to Renvyle. You won’t regret it.
