About Galway
I finally made it to that cosy little holiday spot near Woodford in County Galway after a bit of a faff on the journey. We'd been driving from Shannon Airport, maps app on the go, when we took a wrong turn down some narrow lane that looked promising but led straight into a muddy farm track. Cue me reversing like a pro (or so I thought) while the other half laughed and our dog, Monty, barked at cows peering over the hedge. Heart racing a tad, but we laughed it off, found our way back, and soon enough, there it was – this brilliant single-storey bungalow nestled in Dooros, just 5.6 miles from Woodford village.

Pulling up to the off-road parking felt like arriving at our own secret hideaway. First impressions? Spot on. The place welcomed us with open arms – dog-friendly, perfect for our little crew of four (me, the missus, Monty, and a mate who'd joined for a few days). Stepping inside, the open-plan living space hit us like a warm hug: stylish, comfy, with everything you need for a proper self-cater self-cater holiday. No faffing about – kitchen kitted out with all the gadgets, and that garden! Oh, the garden. Enclosed, private, with a fire pit begging for evening shenanigans.

From the off, I was buzzing with that arrival anticipation – you know, that fizz of "what's next?" But honestly, the joy was in doing bugger all. We proper slowed down here. Mornings started lazy: brew a coffee in the well-equipped kitchen, potter out to the outdoor areas, and flop into a chair with a book. Lough Derg's just a short hop away, its waters shimmering like an invitation, but we barely stirred beyond the garden. Why would we? It was pure bliss sinking into that rhythm of nothing-much.

Days blurred into this heavenly haze of reading. I'd crack open a battered paperback – some Irish yarn about misty hills – while the sun filtered through the trees. The other half rustled up simple feasts: fry-ups, fresh soda bread from Woodford's shop (a quick five-minute drive), or salads munched alfresco. Evenings? Fire pit crackling, marshmallows toasting golden, Monty sprawled at our feet, sharing daft stories till the stars popped out over the lake. No schedules, no screens pinging – just the gentle lap of time.

One afternoon, lounging there with a cuppa, I had this quiet moment of self-reflection. Back home, life's a whirlwind – deadlines, to-do lists, the lot. Here, staring at butterflies flitting in the garden, I realised how rare it is to just *be*. No grand adventures needed; the real magic was this unhurried pace, letting worries melt away like morning mist off the lough. We did pop to Woodford for supplies – lovely village pub for a pint, maybe a gentle lakeside stroll – but mostly, it was garden lounging, napping, repeating.

Packing up felt bittersweet. Shannon Vale (or whatever you call it) nailed that "holiday from holidaying" vibe. If you're after recharging in Galway's quiet corner, go on – treat yourself to a week of sweet doing-nothing. We left fuller, slower, happier. Can't wait for the next lazy escape.
