About Galway
I’ll never forget the drive to Carraroe – we’d been buzzing with excitement about escaping to this tucked-away spot in Galway’s Gaeltacht, but halfway there, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly. It kept directing us down these tiny lanes that looked more like sheep tracks, and before we knew it, we were circling a field with a very unimpressed farmer waving us on. A classic me moment – always overpacking the car with books and snacks, thinking I’m prepared for anything. But we laughed it off, and as the Connemara landscape opened up with those wild hills and glimpses of the Atlantic, the anticipation built. What a spot to unwind.

Pulling up to the bungalow on the outskirts of the pretty village, just 0.4 miles from the heart of Carraroe, I was smitten straight away. It’s this delightful detached place in a peaceful cluster of five houses, and from the first step inside, it wrapped us in the cosiest welcome. Attractive trinkets dotted the shelves, and the furnishings had that perfect lived-in charm without trying too hard. All on one ground floor level, it’s ideal for anyone – three comfy bedrooms, two bathrooms, and that bright, airy open-plan living area calling us to flop down immediately. We dumped the bags and just breathed it all in.

The real magic of the place? It was made for doing bugger all, and boy, did we embrace it. Forget grand plans; this holiday was about lazy cottage days that melted into one another. Mornings started slow – I’d potter out to the garden with a cuppa, the sea air nipping at my cheeks, watching nothing much happen except maybe a gull eyeing the crumbs. The garden’s a proper haven, wildish round the edges with room to stretch out on a blanket, and it felt like our private bubble away from the world. We’d lounge there for hours, me with a dog-eared novel I’d been meaning to crack open for months, losing myself in the pages while the others dozed or chatted lazily about nothing.

Inside, that open-plan space was heaven. We’d gather round the table for simple brekkies – porridge with local honey – then migrate to the sofas by the warming stove. No TV marathons, mind; it was books, board games half-started, and the odd podcast about Irish myths drifting from someone’s phone. Afternoons blurred into napping, gazing out at the view, or a gentle wander to the village for bread and cheese from the local shop. The Gaeltacht vibe seeped in – hearing snatches of Irish on the breeze, feeling properly unplugged. One evening, as the sun dipped low, painting the hills gold, I caught myself staring into space, and it hit me: how often do we let life rush us? Here, time stretched out, worries just fizzled away like mist over the bay.

We did venture out once or twice – a meander along the nearby coastal paths, feet in the pebbly shallows – but honestly, the joy was in the slowing down. No schedules, no hustle. By the end of the week, we’d all softened round the edges, recharged without even trying. If you’re craving that rare gift of proper rest, this corner of Galway delivers it in spades. I’m already plotting a return.
