About Galway
I’ll never forget the drive to our holiday cottage near Woodford in County Galway. We’d rented a car at Shannon Airport, punchy with excitement after a smooth flight from Manchester, dreaming of lazy days by the lough. But about 20 minutes in, disaster struck – or what felt like it. The sat-nav, bless its unreliable heart, decided to take us on a ‘scenic route’ that turned into a narrow, mud-slicked lane barely wide enough for a pram. Branches scraped the roof, and I was convinced we’d end up in a ditch, apologising profusely to the farmer whose field we’d ploughed into. Hubby just laughed, saying it was the perfect Irish welcome. Twenty white-knuckled minutes later, we emerged, dusty but grinning, right onto the winding country lane leading to the cottage.

Pulling up, my heart skipped – there it was, this stunning thatched detached cottage from the 18th century, right next to the owner’s place, just 100 yards from Lough Derg. Lovingly restored to a high standard, it blended old-world charm with cosy modern touches. First impressions? Magic. We stepped into the bright, airy kitchen with its dining area, flung open the double doors to the private rear patio, and there it was: peace on a plate. Cup of coffee in hand that first morning, watching mist lift off the water – pure bliss. No crowds, just us and the countryside whispering hello.

What turned this trip into gold, though, wasn’t the planned itinerary (we ditched that quick). It was the hidden gems we stumbled on by accident, thanks to getting gloriously lost on those quiet back roads. Take the first afternoon: aiming for a gentle lakeside stroll, we veered off down an unmarked track and found a secret cove on Lough Derg, tucked away like a private beach. Tufts of wildflowers, a family of swans gliding by, and not a soul in sight. We picnicked there till dusk, feeling like we’d gatecrashed paradise.

Next day, another wrong turn – this time towards a hamlet even tinier than ours – led to an off-the-beaten-track forest trail. Barely a signpost, just a whisper of a path through ancient trees dripping with moss. We wandered for hours, spotting red squirrels darting about and hearing nothing but birdsong. Lunch was improvised with local cheese from a nearby farm shop we’d blundered into the day before – the owner’s chatty tales of Woodford life thrown in free. Pure serendipity.

One evening, lost again (pattern emerging), we chanced on a weathered stone bridge over a bubbling stream, perfect for a impromptu paddle. Kids splashed about while we cracked open a bottle of Galway Hooker ale, toasting our navigational fails. It got me reflecting, sat there with toes in the water: how often do we chase the big sights and miss these quiet treasures? Back home, life’s a sat-nav straight line – deadlines, routines. Here, getting lost unlocked the real Ireland, the bits postcards forget.

By week’s end, we’d mapped our own hidden network: a wildflower meadow for sunset yoga (well, attempted), a forgotten pier for dawn fishing, even a cosy nook by the lough for stargazing. No tourist traps, just us unearthing Galway’s gentle secrets. If you’re after that, ditch the maps – let the lanes lead you. We left with sunburnt noses, full hearts, and a promise to return. Best mishap ever.
