About Wexford
I’ll never forget the drive down to Wexford – we’d set off from Dublin full of beans, sandwiches packed and the sat-nav chirping away, only for it to conk out just past Enniscorthy. There we were, faffing about with maps on our laps, me arguing with the missus over which roundabout to take, when a local in a battered pickup pulled up alongside. “Lost, are ya?” he grinned through the window, all weathered face and twinkly eyes. Turned out he was heading our way too, so we tailed him the last 20 miles like ducklings, arriving at the cottage just as the sun dipped low over Lady’s Island Lake. What a relief – and what a first impression! With its lovely thatched roof and charming all-wood interior, this traditional cottage exudes old-world charm. It’s tucked on a peaceful country road just half a mile from the pristine Carne Beach, a glorious spot for walking, rock pooling and paddling. Surrounded by nature reserves buzzing with sea birds and wildfowl, and those serene lake views, it felt like we’d stumbled into a postcard.

No sooner had we unpacked than old Seamus from next door popped over with a bottle of poitín and a yarn about the time a seal washed up on the beach during a storm. “Sure, it followed me home!” he chuckled, his brogue thick as clotted cream. Seamus is the king of quirky locals – retired fisherman with stories longer than a winter’s night, going on about the wildfowl that “dance on the lake like they own the place.” We cracked open his homemade firewater (carefully, mind – it packs a punch), and before long he was regaling us with tales of the Raven Point birdwatchers who swear they’ve spotted rare spoonbills. I could’ve listened all evening, but the kids were dragging us down to the beach for rock pooling, so off we went, waving promises of a ceilidh sometime.

The next day brought Mrs. O’Toole from the nearby farm shop, a bustling widow with a laugh like a foghorn and opinions on everything. She’d driven up in her ancient Land Rover, laden with fresh scones, crab claws from the local pots, and wheaten bread still warm. “Yer cottage suits ya – all cosy like a hen’s nest!” she declared, plonking herself at our kitchen table for tea. Over cups of Barry’s, she spun tales of the quirky birdwatchers at the Tacumshane reserve, one fella who mimics curlews so well the real ones answer back. We nattered about the best paddling spots at Carne – “Mind the jellyfish after rain, loves” – and she even roped the littlies into helping name her new batch of chicks. Proper character, that one; left us in stitches with her impression of the postman dodging geese.

Further chats with a couple of lads from the beach – windsurfers mad for the Hook peninsula waves – rounded off the week. One, Declan, swore the lake’s wildfowl whisper secrets if you listen at dawn. We tried it one misty morning walk, and sure enough, felt that magical pull. Staying here made me reflect a bit – amid the rush of life back home, it’s these daft conversations with proper Wexford folk that recharge the batteries. No grand adventures needed; just good crack, nature’s soundtrack, and a cottage that feels like hugging an old friend. Can’t wait to go back – Seamus’ll have aged another decade’s worth of stories by then!
