About Wexford
I’ll never forget the drive down to Wexford – or rather, the comedy of errors that got me there. I’d set off from Dublin full of beans, Spotify blasting some trad tunes to get me in the mood for Ireland’s sunny southeast. But about an hour in, disaster struck: a wrong turn onto some narrow back lane near Enniscorthy, courtesy of my rubbish sense of direction and a sat-nav that decided to throw a wobbly. Cue 20 minutes of reversing round a hedge (thankfully no tractors oncoming) while I muttered to myself like a proper eejit. By the time I spotted the signs for Tacumshane, just 0.7 miles from my holiday spot, I was sweating more than if I’d run a marathon. Still, that anticipation bubbled up – visions of kicking back by the sea, pint in hand, all troubles washed away.

Pulling up to the cottage, though, what a payoff. It’s this cosy, traditional Wexford number – low-roofed and welcoming, tucked away in Greenfield Cross Roads with that perfect rural charm. The sun was dipping low over the fields, casting this golden glow that made the whole place look like a postcard. First impressions? Bloody brilliant, even after my arrival farce. I fumbled the keys at the door (third mishap of the day), but stepping inside felt like a hug from an old mate. Spotless kitchen with everything you’d need for a fry-up, comfy sofas begging for a collapse, and those big windows framing the quiet countryside. No traffic hum, just birds and the odd cow moo – pure bliss after the road rage.

We wasted no time settling in. A quick unpack, then a wander down to Tacumshane Lake, barely a stroll away. It’s this serene spot, perfect for a bit of fishing or just skimmin’ stones. I tried my hand at the latter and, predictably, sent one plopping straight in like a stone-cold loser. Laughed my head off, though – that’s holidays for you. Back at the cottage, we cracked open some local brews and rustled up supper using spuds from a nearby farm shop. The evening light lingered forever, as it does in these parts, and we sat out on the patio watching the world slow down.

Next morning, first impressions held strong. A gentle cycle along the lanes to the Raven Point Nature Reserve – seals basking on the rocks, seals! Felt like I’d stumbled into my own Attenborough doc. Lunch at a wee café in the village, scorfing seafood chowder that was fresh as you like. But honestly, the real magic was the cottage itself. No frills, just that homely vibe that makes you exhale. Made me reflect a bit, actually – back home I’m always rushing, phone glued to my paw. Here, with the mishaps already fading into funny anecdotes, I realised slowing down isn’t just nice, it’s necessary. Wexford’s got that knack for resetting your soul. If you’re after a proper Irish escape, this neck of the woods – and a spot like this – is gold dust. Can’t wait to go back.
