About Belfast
I finally made it to Belfast after what felt like the world's most chaotic drive up from Dublin, but let's rewind a bit. I'd been buzzing with excitement for days about this wee holiday cottage just outside the city in Carrickfergus—proper Northern Irish countryside vibes, you know? Packed the car with enough snacks to feed a rugby team, stuck on some trad tunes, and set off. Big mistake not checking the sat-nav properly. Halfway up, it decided to throw a wobbly, directing me down some narrow lane that turned into a muddy track. Cue me, white-knuckled on the wheel, sliding sideways while swearing at the sheep staring at me like I'd gatecrashed their picnic. Heart in my mouth, I reversed out (miraculously without a scratch) and found the main road again, arriving at the cottage just as the sun dipped low, all flushed and frazzled but grinning like an eejit.

Pulling up to this charming little terraced cottage, I was instantly smitten. It's got that classic whitewashed front with flower boxes bursting with colour, right on a quiet street that feels like stepping back in time. The host had left the key in a clever spot, thank goodness, because my phone battery was on its last legs from all the wrong turns. Stepping inside, the first impression hit me like a warm hug—cosy as anything, with a compact living room that screamed 'put your feet up'. Fresh towels folded neatly, a welcome pack of soda bread and butter on the kitchen table (proper thoughtful touch), and windows framing views of the gentle hills rolling down to Belfast Lough. I dumped my bags, cracked open a can of the black stuff from the fridge, and just soaked it in. After the road drama, this place felt like pure magic.

Next morning, still chuckling about my driving antics over a fry-up I rustled up (bacon on point, even if the eggs were a bit wobbly), I wandered out to explore. Carrickfergus is a gem—mere minutes from the castle, that massive Norman fortress looming over the harbour like it's guarding ancient secrets. I strolled the battlements, wind whipping off the lough, pretending I was a knight for five minutes (humiliatingly bad sword mime, but who cares?). Popped into the marina nearby, watched boats bobbing and folks walking their dogs, then grabbed a coffee at a tiny café where the barista quizzed me on my 'holiday face'—spot on, she was.

The cottage became my perfect base for lazy afternoons. I'd flop on the sofa with a book, windows open to the sound of gulls, reflecting on how I needed this break more than I thought. Work had been manic, leaving me knackered and snappy; here, amid the quiet streets and salty air, I felt the tension melt away. One evening, I even tried cooking a stew—ended up with something edible, which is a win for me. A gentle nudge to myself: slow down, enjoy the simple stuff.

By the end of the stay, that arrival mishap was the best story—I'd do it all again in a heartbeat. If you're after a spot that's close enough to Belfast's buzz but far enough for peace, this corner of Carrickfergus delivers. Proper tonic for the soul.
