About Enniskillen
We'd been dreaming of a quiet getaway to Enniskillen for months, just me and Sarah, escaping the daily grind for some proper cottage downtime. The drive up from Belfast was meant to be a breeze, but wouldn't you know it, about halfway there I took a wrong turn onto some narrow back road near Lisnaskea. Sat nav went haywire, and we ended up in a field with sheep giving us the side-eye. Sarah laughed so hard she nearly spilled her flask of tea – classic us, turning a simple journey into mild chaos. But once we sorted ourselves out, the anticipation built; Lough Erne sparkling in the distance had us grinning like kids.

Pulling up to the cottage, off-road parking for two cars was a godsend after our detour. First impressions? Magic. It's this cosy rural spot hugging the edge of the lough, perfect for a couple wanting to switch off. Stepping inside felt like a warm hug – ground-floor double bedroom right there with its en-suite, walk-in shower belting out hot water and a heated towel rail that made me feel posh. Upstairs, our first-floor double had a handy sofa bed (just in case we fancied a lazy morning sprawl), and the bathroom was a treat: freestanding bath for a long soak or that walk-in shower for a quick freshen-up, towel rail keeping everything toasty.

We wasted no time settling into cottage life. Mornings kicked off with bacon butties on the patio, watching herons skim the water – pure bliss, no rush, no plans. Afternoons were for ambling along the lough paths, picking blackberries and dodging the odd curious cow. One day we hired a little rowboat from a nearby jetty, paddling out to spot swans and fish jumping; Sarah got us tangled in weeds, leading to helpless giggles as we flailed about like amateurs. Evening chaos came courtesy of my "famous" shepherd's pie attempt – undercooked spuds and a smoke alarm serenade. We ended up with fish and chips from the local spot in Lisnaskea, eaten by candlelight (power cut, naturally), toasting with tea from the flask.

A highlight was wandering to the quay just down the way, where the water laps gently and the sunsets turn the sky pink. We'd sit with a thermos, chatting about nothing and everything, the kind of simple pleasures you forget exist in the city hustle. There was this gentle moment one evening, staring out over the lough, when I caught myself reflecting: life's too short not to chase these pockets of peace. We're not spring chickens anymore, but trips like this remind you what's important – each other, a bit of laughter, and no agenda.

Short breaks here recharge the soul without the faff. If you're after relaxed family-couple vibes amid Fermanagh's beauty, this is your spot. We're already plotting a return – minus the sat nav drama.
