About Enniskillen
I’ll never forget the drive to Enniskillen – a proper faff from the moment we left Belfast. Satnav decided to play silly buggers halfway there, sending us down a narrow lane that turned into a muddle of puddles after a sneaky shower. We ended up with the car caked in Fermanagh clay, laughing our heads off as I tried to reverse without ending up in a ditch. But honestly, that little mishap just ramped up the anticipation. By the time we crested the hill and spotted the Lakelands unfolding below, all shimmering with those famous loughs, I was buzzing. Enniskillen felt like a hidden gem, and our wee holiday cottage – a proper charming retreat tucked away in the heart of it all, just 1.8 miles from Derrylin – promised the perfect unwind.

Pulling up, the first impressions were spot on. Neat garden bursting with wildflowers, a cosy vibe that screamed "kick off your shoes and stay a while." We’d booked it for the pure joy of doing bugger all, and from the off, it delivered. No grand plans, no rushing about – just lazy days stretching out like the lakelands themselves.

First morning, I cracked open the French doors to the garden, brewed a massive pot of tea, and flopped into a sun-dappled chair with a dog-eared paperback. The air was that crisp, peaty sort you only get round here, laced with the faint ripple of water from nearby shores. Birds chirped away, oblivious to the world, and I swear time slowed right down. No emails pinging, no deadlines nagging – just me, the book, and the odd butterfly flitting past. Lunch was a lazy affair: fresh soda bread from the Enniskillen market we’d nipped to the day before (couldn’t resist a quick wander for supplies), smeared with local butter and cheese. Eaten picnic-style on the grass, with crumbs attracting a cheeky robin who eyed us like we were the help.

Afternoons blurred into garden lounging. I’d stretch out on the lounger, half-reading, half-dozing, watching clouds drift over the loughs. My other half pottered with a bit of weeding – or pretended to, mostly – while I reflected on how knackered I’d been before we came. Work had me wired, always chasing the next thing, but here? It hit me gently: slowing down isn’t lazy, it’s blooming essential. Like recharging your soul on Fermanagh time.

Evenings were pure bliss. As the sun dipped, casting that golden glow over everything, we’d light the fire (cosy even in summer chills), crack open a bottle of wine, and chat about nothing much. One night, I spotted a hedgehog waddling through the garden – proper magic. No need for telly or scrolling; the quiet was the entertainment.

Those few days in our Enniskillen hideaway were a tonic. Reminded me life’s too short not to savour the slow moments. If you’re after proper relaxation in the Lakelands, find yourself a spot like that and just… be. Utterly restorative.
