About Portrush
I’ll never forget the drive up to Portrush – or rather, the near-disaster that kicked off our holiday. We’d left Belfast early, buzzing with that daft excitement you get before a seaside getaway, only for the sat-nav to chuck a wobbly just as we hit the Antrim coast. “Turn left in 200 yards,” it chirped, right into what turned out to be a farmer’s field. Cue me swearing at the dashboard (under my breath, mind), while my other half doubled over laughing as we reversed out, mud splattered up the tyres. Typical us – always turning a simple journey into a comedy sketch. But by the time we wound down into Downhill, that anticipation had me grinning like a kid at the sweet shop. The sea was sparkling under a rare clear sky, and I could already smell the salt air.

Pulling up to this cracking single-storey cottage, just a stone’s throw from the beach, we were proper chuffed. Off-road parking right outside – a godsend after our muddy escapade – and those sea views hit us like a warm hug. It’s the sort of place that screams romantic retreat for two, tucked away in this picturesque village, with Castlerock only a few miles off. We tumbled out of the car, arms full of bags, and fumbled the key code like amateurs, dropping half our shopping in the process. Crisps everywhere, a bottle of wine rolling perilously close to the step. “Smooth as ever,” I muttered to myself, shaking my head with a wry smile. Honestly, looking back, it was a right laugh – that little chaos making the whole arrival feel even more real, you know?

Stepping inside was pure magic, though. The open-plan space flowed so seamlessly – kitchen, dining, sitting room all blending into one cosy haven. I dumped the bags and beelined for the breakfast bar, which seats four but felt perfect for just us. The kitchen’s bang up to date, stocked with everything you’d need to whip up a fry-up or something a bit posher. We cracked open that escaped bottle of wine straight away, toasting our survival, and flopped onto the sofa with those epic views unfolding through the windows. The beach was literally a short stroll away – we could hear the waves whispering already.

That first evening, we wandered down to Downhill Beach, toes in the sand, watching the sun dip behind the cliffs. It was one of those moments that makes you pause and think: why don’t we do this more often? Work’s been mad lately, and I’ve been guilty of letting life steamroller the simple joys. But here, in this inviting little spot, everything slowed right down. We mooched back for a lazy pasta dinner at the bar, giggling about our arrival farce, and crashed out in the comfy bed, lulled by the sea.

Next morning, we headed the short hop to Portrush – grabbed fish and chips from a beachside van, proper greasy heaven, and paddled in the shallows at East Strand. The whole area’s a dream: rugged coast, those Giant’s Causeway vibes without the crowds if you time it right. We even snuck in a gentle cliff-top walk, wind in our hair, feeling utterly alive. Staying here’s reset my batteries – mishaps and all. If you’re after a proper escape, this is it. Just double-check your sat-nav.
