About Aviemore
I finally made it to Grantown-on-Spey after a bit of a faff on the drive up from Edinburgh. The sat-nav decided to play silly buggers halfway through the Cairngorms, sending me down a single-track road that had me white-knuckling the wheel past a herd of shaggy Highland cows eyeing me like I was the main course. Heart in mouth, but we arrived just as the sun dipped behind the hills, and blimey, what a first impression. This cosy little holiday cottage, all tucked away with a welcoming vibe, felt like slipping into a warm hug after the chaos.

I'd been buzzing about it for weeks, picturing lazy mornings with fresh coffee and cracking views over the valley. And from the off, it delivered. The kitchen was a proper gem – well-stocked with everything you need, which was lucky because I had grand plans to channel my inner MasterChef. First night, we nipped to the high street, just a stone's throw away, and grabbed essentials from one of those brilliant independent shops. Local cheeses, crusty bread, and a slab of smoked salmon that was so fresh it practically swam off the shelf. Back at the cottage, I attempted a gourmet fish supper – pan-fried salmon with tatties and a herby butter sauce. It started off promising, but I got a tad overzealous with the garlic, turning it into a vampire-repelling monster. We laughed it off with a bottle of decent Cairngorms-brewed ale, scraping it down anyway. Proper holiday food, even if self-inflicted.

Next day, we wandered into town for breakfast at one of the cafes – think fluffy pancakes stacked with local berries and thick, creamy yogurt. Grantown's high street is a foodie's dream, lined with spots serving up hearty Scotch breakfasts or lighter avocado toasts if you're feeling fancy. We hit the markets too; there's a little pop-up one on weekends with stalls groaning under homemade jams, venison sausages, and artisan breads. I stocked up on cranachan ingredients – oats, raspberries, whisky – determined to nail a proper Scottish pud. Evening took us to a cracking pub down the road, the kind with low ceilings and real fires. Pint of local IPA in hand, we tucked into battered haddock and chips that were golden perfection, with mushy peas on the side. The banter with the locals was half the fun – tales of fishing in the nearby rivers and tips on the best spots for wild garlic foraging.

One lunch was a total win: I slow-cooked a shoulder of lamb from the butcher's, rubbed with rosemary from the cottage garden (or what I hoped was rosemary). Paired it with roasted roots and a gravy that reduced down to sticky heaven. Sat outside as the mist rolled in, feeling a proper sense of smug satisfaction. But here's a quiet moment of reflection – amid all the scoffing, I realised it's these simple, messy meals that make a holiday. No Michelin-star pressure, just good grub with mates, surrounded by those moody Scottish hills. We even tried baking soda bread one rainy afternoon, which came out more like a doorstop, but slathered in butter and local honey, it was bliss.

Pub crawls became our ritual – another night at a cosy bar with wood-fired pizzas topped with haggis and black pudding, washed down with malty heavies. The portions are generous up here; you roll home stuffed and happy. By week's end, we'd devoured enough to fuel a Munro or two, but who needs hiking when the eating's this good? If you're after a break where the food leads the way, this corner of the Cairngorms – and a cottage like ours – is pure magic. Can't wait to go back for round two.
