About Aviemore
Pulling up to the lodge just as the sun dipped behind the Cairngorms, though, all that chaos melted away. Nestled right in the heart of the national park, about six miles from Aviemore, this four-bedroom beauty sleeps 14 and felt like our own private slice of Scottish magic from the off. The anticipation had been building all week – visions of cosy fires and epic views – and it didn’t disappoint. We tumbled out, bags flying everywhere, and there it was: this impressive retreat surrounded by nothing but whispering pines and those jaw-dropping mountains. First impressions? Bloody brilliant – I mean, brilliant. The scenery wrapped around us like a warm tartan blanket, with Loch Garten glinting in the distance and the air so crisp it tingled. We’d barely dropped our bags before cracking open a bottle of something local (non-alcoholic for the driver, mind), and the place just invited us to unwind. It’s got everything you need for a group getaway – spacious, comfy, and that perfect blend of luxury without feeling fussy. That first evening, we wandered the short trail down to Loch Mallachie, binoculars at the ready, and spotted an osprey swooping low over the water. Proper spine-tingling stuff. Made me reflect a bit, actually – there I was, city lad from Manchester, faffing about with wrong turns earlier, yet here in this serene spot, everything slowed right down. Life’s too short not to chase these moments, eh? Next morning, still buzzing from the arrival glow, we ambled a mile over to Boat of Garten Golf Club. I’m no Tiger Woods – my swing’s more enthusiastic flail – but teeing off amid those verdant fairways with eagles soaring overhead? Comedy gold. We kept it local, pottering along waymarked paths through ancient forests, spotting golden eagles and chuckling at my rubbish photos. No need for Aviemore’s buzz that first day; this hideaway had us hooked. A wee distillery tour nearby sealed it – sampling the amber nectar, chatting with the locals about their craft. By tea time, back at the lodge, we were toasting our lucky escape from the road mishaps. That slightly shambolic arrival set the tone, really – a reminder that the best holidays come with a side of human error. If you’re after a luxurious bolt-hole in the Cairngorms, near Aviemore’s adventures but worlds away in peace, this is it. We left with full hearts, dodgy tans, and a promise to return minus the satnav drama. |
