About Aviemore
I’ll never forget the drive up to Aviemore – we’d packed the car with enough snacks to feed a small army, but about halfway through the A9, I realised I’d left my favourite book behind. Typical me, always dashing out the door in a flap. Still, the anticipation built as the Highland scenery unfolded: those rolling hills turning into proper mountains, the Cairngorms looming like old mates waving hello. By the time we trundled into the village, I was buzzing, dreaming of kicking back in our cosy two-bed apartment right in the heart of it all.

First impressions? Spot on. The place was this inviting little haven, all welcoming vibes and just the right size for us – perfect for a couple of mates wanting to unwind without the faff of a massive house. We dumped the bags, cracked open a couple of tins, and that was us sorted. No grand plans, you see; this trip was all about doing bugger all, and boy, did it deliver.

The garden was the star of the show. Tucked away but with views peeking over to the nearby Rothiemurchus Estate, it was our private chill zone. Mornings started slow: brew in hand, feet up on a lounger, watching the birds flit about Lochan Eilein way in the distance (it’s only five minutes if you fancied a stroll, but why rush?). I’d crack open a dog-eared paperback – finally got round to that Ian Rankin I’d been meaning to read – and lose hours. The sun filtered through the trees, warm but not scorching, and the air smelled like pine and fresh earth. Pure bliss.

Afternoons blurred into lazy lunches: cheese toasties and crisps, eaten al fresco while the world buzzed on without us. One day, I swear I saw a red squirrel dart across the fence – wildlife watching from the hammock, no binoculars required. We’d chat nonsense, nap, maybe potter to one of the village shops for more supplies. Aviemore’s got that easy village hum: a few eateries if you fancied a chippy tea, but mostly we stayed put, savouring the slowness. No Cairngorm treks or Loch Morlich paddles for us; those are for the go-getters. Us? We were masters of the art of nowt.

There was this gentle moment one evening, sat in the garden as the light faded, pint in hand. I caught myself reflecting: life back home’s a whirlwind of deadlines and to-do lists, innit? Here, time stretched out like elastic. No pressure, no guilt – just being. Made me chuckle at my usual Type-A self; who knew switching off could feel this good? We even skipped the Highland Games chatter in the pub down the road – heard they’re cracking fun nearby in summer, but our vibe was strictly sofa-and-sunset.

By the end of the week, we were proper recharged, promising to return for more of the same. Aviemore’s got adventures a-plenty if you want ’em, but for pure joy in doing very little, that apartment and its garden nailed it. Slow down, folks – you won’t regret it.
