About Aviemore
I’ll never forget the drive up to Aviemore – we’d piled into the car with the kids buzzing about Highland adventures, only for the sat-nav to chuck us onto some winding single-track road that felt like it hadn’t seen tarmac since the Jacobites. Cue a minor panic when we met a sheep farmer’s Land Rover head-on; a three-point turn on a hairpin bend with the little ones chanting “baaa” from the back seat. Classic family holiday chaos, but by the time we rolled into town, hearts were light and the anticipation was electric – those Cairngorm peaks looming like something out of a storybook.

Pulling up to the apartment, I was chuffed to bits. It’s this cracking open-plan spot, all contemporary vibes with a massive kitchen and dining area that screamed “home from home”. Perfect for our crew of four – cosy double bedroom for me and the wife, and the sofa bed in the living room sorted the kids without a fuss. Two shower rooms too, which meant no morning queues. First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags and cracked open a bottle of fizz on the communal terrace as the sun dipped behind the hills – pure bliss.

Next morning, we ambled down to the Rothiemurchus Estate, just a short hop away, for a gentle family hike through ancient pines. The kids went feral spotting red squirrels (one swore he saw a pine marten, but it was probably a twig), while we parents pretended we were Bear Grylls. Lunch was simple joys at a picnic spot by Loch an Eilein – cheese rolls and flask tea, with the castle ruins reflecting like a postcard. Back at base, I rustled up a shepherd’s pie in that well-kitted kitchen, the lot of us crammed round the table giggling over the day’s daft photos. Evenings were wood-burning stove magic; toasting marshmallows while the rain pattered outside, turning any chill into toasty hygge.

One afternoon, we hit the Strathspey Steam Railway for a puffing jaunt through the forests – the kids’ faces lit up like Christmas, and I had a quiet moment reflecting on how these daft, low-key days beat any fancy resort. Me, the eternal planner, finally clocked that holiday magic isn’t in grand plans but in the mess: muddy boots by the door, sofa-bed hair in the morning, and that shared warmth when the Highlands whisper “slow down”.

We wandered Aviemore’s high street for fish and chips one night – crispy, greasy perfection from the local chippy – then sprawled on the terrace again, stargazing till the midges chased us in. No epic treks or posh dinners needed; just cottage-life simplicity with the family, wrapped in Highland air. If you’re after a relaxed break that recharges the soul, this is it. We’re already plotting a return – sheep mishaps and all.
