About Aviemore
I’ll never forget the drive up to Aviemore – rain lashing the windscreen like it had a personal grudge, and then, just past Kingussie, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us down a single-track road that felt more like a sheep’s personal runway. We bumped along for what seemed like ages, me gripping the wheel and my other half muttering about trusting technology less than a dodgy weather forecast. But as we crested the final hill, the clouds parted just enough to reveal those rolling Cairngorms, and suddenly all was forgiven. Aviemore unfolded below us, all cosy and inviting, and my heart did a little flip of anticipation. What a spot for a proper unwind.

Pulling up to the property, we were gobsmacked – a cracking little detached cottage, modern inside with that welcoming, lived-in vibe that screams “kick off your shoes and stay a while”. The garden stretched out like a private playground, backed by woods that rustled gently in the breeze. First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags, cracked open a brew, and just sat there on the patio, grinning like idiots as the tension from the road melted away.

The whole trip was about doing sod all, and boy, did we nail it. No grand plans, no manic hiking marathons – just lazy cottage days that felt like a gift to ourselves. Mornings started slow: I’d potter out to the garden with a mug of tea, plonking myself in one of those comfy chairs while the mist lifted off the hills. The birdsong was ridiculous – proper dawn chorus, not the urban racket I’m used to. I’d lose hours reading, feet up, flipping through a battered paperback I’d brought along. My other half joined with her Kindle, and we’d chat lazily about nothing much, or nothing at all.

Afternoons were garden heaven. We’d fire up the barbecue (after a minor comedy faff with the instructions), grilling sausages and veg while the sun – when it deigned to show – warmed our faces. That garden was a dream: wildflowers nodding in the breeze, a bit of lawn for lounging, and enough space to feel utterly alone, even though Aviemore’s hum was just a short stroll away. Evenings? Cosy inside with the wood burner flickering, more reading, maybe a board game that descended into giggles over daft rules. One night, I caught myself staring out the window at the darkening woods, thinking how I never switch off at home – always chasing the next thing. Here, time stretched out, lazy and lovely. It was a gentle nudge: slowing down isn’t slacking; it’s what we’re built for.

We did venture out once or twice – a gentle amble to the Rothiemurchus Estate for a flat walk by the river, or nipping to the local shop for essentials (and extra Hobnobs). But mostly, it was the cottage bubble: reading till my eyes ached, garden naps interrupted by cheeky squirrels, and that profound joy of bugger all on the agenda. Coming home, I felt recharged, not knackered. If you’re after proper holiday bliss, find yourself a spot like this in Aviemore and just… be. Pure magic.
