About Aviemore
I’ll never forget the drive up to Aviemore – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from Inverness turned into a comedy of errors thanks to Sat Nav’s finest hour. Picture this: me, white-knuckling the wheel as it cheerily directed us down what felt like a sheep track masquerading as a B-road. We ended up doing a three-point turn in a passing place, with a local farmer giving us the side-eye from his tractor. “Are we lost already?” my other half quipped, and I just laughed it off, secretly wondering if we’d pitched up in Narnia instead. But as we crested the final hill, the Cairngorms unfolded like a postcard, all purple heather and jagged peaks under a sky that couldn’t decide if it was sunny or moody. The anticipation built – Aviemore’s that perfect Highland spot where you escape the daily grind for proper fresh air and adventure.

Pulling into the drive of our holiday cottage, hearts racing from the near-miss, we were gobsmacked. It’s one of those cosy, traditional-style places – think low ceilings, a cracking wood-burning stove, and that lived-in charm that screams “kick off your boots and stay a while.” First impressions? Spot on. We tumbled through the door, bags everywhere, and it felt like coming home to a mate’s place rather than a rental. The views from the lounge straight out to the mountains had us grinning like kids – who needs posh hotels when you’ve got this?

That first evening, after sorting the chaos (and a cheeky cuppa to steady the nerves), we wandered down to the nearby Rothiemurchus Estate, just a short stroll away. It’s pure magic there – ancient pines whispering secrets, a sparkling loch perfect for skimmin’ stones. We hired bikes from the centre and pedalled along easy forest tracks, dodging puddles from an earlier shower and pretending we were pros. Light humour ensued when I wobbled into a bush – “Timber!” I yelped, emerging twig-adorned and laughing. Proper daft, but that’s holidays for you.

Next morning, still buzzing from arrival highs, we hit the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre, a five-minute drive up the road. Feeding those fluffy beasts was a highlight – they’re so tame, nuzzling right up with their velvet antlers. I caught myself in a quiet moment by the paddock, thinking how these trips remind me to slow down. Back home, life’s a whirlwind of deadlines and doom-scrolling; here, watching mist roll off the hills, it’s like hitting reset. We even squeezed in a family-friendly sledge down the gentle slopes at the base of the funicular – no Olympic skills required, just pure glee.

Evenings were bliss in the cottage: bubbling stew on the hob, board games by the fire, and stargazing from the garden (clear skies, fingers crossed). That messy arrival mishap? Best icebreaker ever – turned potential stress into stories we’ll retell for years. Aviemore’s got that pull; it’s unpretentious, wild, and just what the soul needs. If you’re after a Highland hug in cottage form, this is it. We left recharged, already plotting the return.
