About Aviemore
I’ll never forget the drive up to Aviemore – we’d packed the car to the gills with wellies, board games and enough tea bags to last a siege, only for the sat-nav to chuck a wobbly just past Perth. It kept insisting we take a sneaky detour through some farmer’s field, and there we were, me swearing at the dashboard while my other half tried not to laugh. Twenty minutes later, we were back on track, hearts racing a bit, but the Highland scenery unfolding like a proper postcard made up for it. Snow-dusted hills, those moody skies – I was buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation, you know?

Pulling up to the lodge felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. It’s one of those cosy family spots, all welcoming with its pitched roof and nestled-right-in vibe among the pines, just a short stroll from the village buzz. First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags, cracked open a couple of tins, and just soaked it in – the quiet, the fresh air whistling through the trees. No city racket, just us, a wood burner flickering away, and the promise of proper downtime.

Next morning, we wandered down to Aviemore’s high street, grabbing bacon rolls from that little café everyone raves about – crispy, greasy perfection to kick off the day. Then it was Rothiemurchus Estate for us, hiring bikes and pedalling along those forest tracks. The kids – well, our imaginary ones in this couple’s escape, ha – would’ve loved the mud splatters, but it was just us two giggling like dafties as we wobbled over roots, stopping for picnic lunches by the river. Simple joys, innit? Afternoon brought a saunter to the Highland Wildlife Park, not too far up the road, where we gawped at the snowy owls and red squirrels, feeling like we’d gatecrashed Narnia.

Back at the lodge, it was cottage chaos at its finest – I tried my hand at a stew in the kitchen, only to set off the smoke alarm with a rogue onion. We ended up with fish and chips from the chippy anyway, eaten on the patio as the sun dipped behind the Cairngorms. Evenings blurred into board games by the fire, a dram or two, and stargazing from the garden – clearer skies than I’ve seen in years. One night, I caught myself just staring at the flames, thinking how we never do this at home. Work, screens, the grind – it all felt miles away. Made me reflect on how we need these breaks to remember what matters: each other, a bit of mess, and no agenda.

Of course, there was the inevitable washing-up pile-up and a sock lost to the sofa crevices, but that’s the charm of it. No five-star fuss, just real, relaxed Highland living. We left Aviemore fitter, happier, and plotting our next jaunt already. If you’re after that easy family couple vibe – or just a breather – this is the spot. Proper magic.
