About Ayrshire
I’ll never forget the drive down from Glasgow to Ayrshire – sat nav said an hour and a half, but no, some daft roadworks turned it into a proper faff, with me stuck behind a tractor doing 20mph for what felt like miles. Still, as we finally trundled into the rolling countryside, the anticipation built; I’d been dreaming of ditching the city grind for a bit of proper Scottish fresh air.

Pulling up to this beautiful whitewashed cottage right at the entrance to Martnaham Nature Reserve was a belter of a first impression. It’s the perfect spot, overlooking that 2-mile stretch of water teeming with wildfowl and swans gliding about like they own the place. Cosy inside, with everything you need for a self-catering jaunt, it felt like home from the off – kettle on, boots unpacked, ready to hit the trails.

First full day, the weather gods were smiling: bright blue skies, not a cloud in sight. We laced up and headed straight into the reserve’s paths, weaving along the water’s edge. Swans honked at us cheekily as we crunched over gravel tracks, spotting herons and ducks everywhere. It’s a walker’s paradise here, dead easy to lose a few hours without trying. Pushed on to some of the country tracks snaking through the hills – gentle ups and downs, with views that make you stop and proper breathe it in. Felt like a right tonic after the drive’s stress.

Next morning, classic British weather decided to gatecrash. Woke to horizontal rain lashing the windows – typical Ayrshire, innit? No point fighting it, so we layered up in waterproofs and wellies, chuckling at how optimistic we’d packed. The coastal trails nearby called, even in the dreich – that’s the joy of it, you just adapt. Sloshed along the Ayrshire coastline paths, wind whipping our faces, but the drama of crashing waves and rugged cliffs made it epic. Dodged a few massive puddles that could’ve swallowed a small dog, and laughed when I nearly went arse-over-tit on a muddy slope. Changed plans on the fly: instead of a long hike, we looped back through Rozelle’s grounds, about 5 miles off. The rain eased to a fine mist, perfect for ambling past the changing exhibitions and grabbing a warm coffee in the café – soggy but satisfied.

A couple of days later, sun peeked out again, so we tackled more of the reserve’s hidden gems. Those coastal and country tracks are brilliant for cyclists too, but we stuck to hiking, spotting red squirrels darting about. One evening, as the light faded over the water, I sat on a bench reflecting – life’s too short for always chasing perfect weather. These walks, rain or shine, sorted my head out, reminded me why I love getting out here. Even plotted a Burns pilgrimage to Alloway village, just 5 miles away – a gentle stroll over the cobbled Brig o’ Doon, pondering Tam o’ Shanter in the drizzle.

Ayrshire’s walks hooked us proper. That cottage was the ideal base – no faff, just fresh air and whatever the skies threw at us. Can’t wait to go back.
