About Ayrshire
Pulling up to the holiday house, I had this buzz of anticipation – you know that mix of “what if it’s a dump?” and “please let there be a cracking view”. First impressions? Spot on. It’s one of those cosy terraced spots right in the heart of things, with a nod to seaside chic – think whites and blues that make you feel instantly on holiday. We dumped the bags and cracked open a bottle of fizz on the balcony, gazing out over the harbour where fishing boats bobbed about. Hunger hit hard, though, so no time to waste. First stop was the local fishmonger down by the harbour – Girvan’s got a proper working one, piled high with glistening mackerel and plump scallops straight off the boats. I grabbed a couple of sea bream and some fresh prawns, dreaming of a chef-level dinner. Back at the house, the kitchen was a dream: decent oven, sharp knives, and a big table for faffing about. My cooking attempt? Disaster with a side of comedy. I tried pan-frying the bream with garlic and lemon, but got distracted by the view and ended up with slightly charred edges. Still tasted ace dipped in butter, washed down with a crisp Sauvignon from the offy. We laughed it off over plates piled high, the kind of meal that tastes better because you’ve mucked it up yourself. Next morning, we wandered to the farmers’ market in town – it’s a gem, just a short stroll away, with stalls groaning under Ayrshire cheeses, tatties, and homemade scones still warm from the oven. I loaded up on smoked kippers, local cheddar, and a loaf of crusty bread that smelled like heaven. Pub lunch called after that: the Harbour Bar, right on our doorstep, does the best fish and chips I’ve had in ages. Crispy batter, fat chips, and mushy peas that hit the spot, all while chatting to locals about the day’s catch. Evenings blurred into more of the same – one night, a curry from the chippie down the road (surprisingly banging, with proper naan), another attempting a pasta with market tomatoes and chorizo that actually turned out half-decent. I’ve got to say, lounging there with a pint from the nearby Girvan Arms, picking at cheeseboard remnants, I had a proper moment of reflection. Life back home’s all rush and ready meals, but here, faffing in the kitchen and pub-hopping felt like proper living. Simple stuff, but it recharged the batteries. If you’re after a food-focused escape, this corner of Ayrshire’s a belter – just don’t trust your satnav. |
