About Cairngorms
I’ll never forget the drive up to the Cairngorms – or rather, the comedy of errors that got me there. I’d set off from Aberdeen full of beans, playlist blasting some cracking indie tunes, thinking it’d be a straight shot to my holiday lodge near Banchory. But no, about halfway in, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly. It rerouted me down some winding single-track road that felt like it hadn’t seen tarmac since the war, complete with a flock of sheep blocking the way. One cheeky bugger stared me down as if I was the intruder, and I ended up reversing into a ditch – nothing major, just enough to ping a wing mirror and make my heart skip. Laughed it off in the end, though; classic me, turning a simple journey into an episode of Top Gear gone wrong.

By the time I pulled up, the sun was dipping low, painting the hills in that golden Highland glow that makes you forgive all prior sins. There it was, my cosy wee lodge nestled in the woods, all rustic charm with its pitched roof and welcoming porch light flickering on just as I arrived. First impressions? Bloody brilliant – or rather, dead gorgeous. Stepped inside and whoosh, instant calm after the road rage. The open-plan living space smelled faintly of pine and fresh linen, with a wood-burner already set and ready to chase away the evening chill. Kitchen was kitted out proper, no faffing about with dodgy appliances; I cracked open a tin of soup and felt like I’d won the lottery.

That first night, I just soaked it in. Stepped out onto the deck with a cuppa, listening to the rustle of trees and the distant hoot of an owl – pure magic. No neighbours in sight, just the whisper of the River Dee not far off, and those ancient Caledonian pines standing sentinel. I’d been buzzing with anticipation all week, picturing lazy walks and fresh air, but the reality hit harder: this was proper escapism, the kind that makes city life feel like a bad dream.

Next morning, still chuckling about the sheep standoff, I laced up my boots for a gentle wander along the nearby paths. Spotted red squirrels darting about – proper cute, like something out of a Beatrix Potter book – and even a deer grazing in the mist. Popped over to the local spot by the river for a bit of fishing (didn’t catch owt, mind, but the peace was prize enough). Lunched on homemade butties, then back for a siesta by the fire. It got me thinking, didn’t it? Here I am, mid-forties, always rushing about work in Edinburgh, and one daft drive later, I’m reminded how dead simple it is to switch off. No grand adventures needed; just this lodge, these woods, and a bit of breathing space.

Honestly, if you’re after a reset without the hassle, this corner of the Cairngorms delivers. Messy arrival and all, it was the perfect tonic. Can’t wait to go back – minus the ditch-diving next time.
