About Cairngorms
I’ll never forget the drive up to the Cairngorms – a proper Scottish road trip that started with me faffing about in Aviemore, trying to find a decent pasty before the satnav decided to take us on a scenic detour through some single-track lanes. We ended up behind a shepherd herding sheep at a snail’s pace, which had us laughing and me promising the other half I wouldn’t grumble. By the time we pulled into Ballater, the anticipation was buzzing – golden afternoon light on the hills, that crisp Highland air sneaking through the car vents. What a first impression; it felt like the world was exhaling with us.

The cottage was a cosy wee gem, all welcoming nooks and a style that screamed “kick off your boots and stay a while”. We tumbled in, bags dumped, kettle on, and just… sighed. After months of rushing about, this was our reset button. The joy of it all was doing precisely nothing, and loving every lazy minute.

Mornings kicked off slow. I’d potter out to the garden with a mug of tea, the kind of garden that’s wild enough to feel alive but private enough to claim as your own. Deer would tiptoe past the fence, and I’d watch them munching away while the mist lifted off the hills. No agenda, just me, a book, and birdsong. I devoured two novels that week – one thriller I’d been saving, the other a gentle memoir that had me chuckling at my own daft life choices. Sat there on a lounger, feet up, flipping pages as the sun warmed my face. Pure bliss.

Afternoons blurred into the same glorious rhythm. A short amble to the garden bench for a nap, or sprawling on the sofa with biscuits and the radio tuned to some folk tunes. We’d chat about nothing much – dreams, old holidays, what’s for tea – then lapse into companionable silence. One day, I caught myself staring at a squirrel raiding the bird feeder, mesmerised by its cheeky antics. “This is it,” I thought, that gentle pang of self-reflection hitting me. Back home, I’m always chasing the next thing, but here? Slowing down felt like the real luxury. No hikes up Ben Macdui or fancy distillery tours; just us, unwinding in this pocket of peace five minutes from Ballater’s high street.

Evenings were for simple suppers – local sausages from the butcher, baked spuds, a glass of red by the window as dusk painted the sky pink. We’d play cards till eyelids drooped, then tumble into bed with the window cracked for that cool mountain breeze. Five nights flew by in a haze of contentment, but oh, what a recharge.

Packing up, I felt oddly reluctant, like leaving a favourite jumper behind. If you’re craving a holiday where the highlight is savouring the quiet, this corner of the Cairngorms delivers. Do yourself a favour – book it, breathe deep, and let the world spin without you for a bit.
