About Cairngorms
I’ll never forget the drive up to the Cairngorms – we’d packed the car with enough tea bags and biscuits to last a siege, but about halfway there, just past Braemar, the satnav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us down a single-track road that looked more like a sheep’s personal runway. My other half, Dave, was gripping the wheel like it was a lifeline, muttering about “why didn’t we just take the train?”, while I was frantically waving my phone around for signal, convinced we’d end up in someone’s back field. In the end, we laughed it off over a thermos of coffee, and honestly, that little detour only ramped up the excitement. As we finally crested the hill and spotted our holiday cottage nestled in the Deeside countryside near Banchory, my heart did a proper flip – those rolling hills, the crisp air, it was like the Highlands were rolling out the red carpet.

Pulling up to the place, a cosy stables conversion with that classic rustic charm, we were grinning like kids. First impressions? Spot on. The wooden door swung open to reveal a snug living room with a wood burner begging to be lit, and a kitchen that screamed “whip up a stew and forget the world”. No grand lobby or fancy gadgets – just proper cottage vibes, perfect for us two after a hectic year at work. We dumped the bags and cracked open a bottle of local Cairngorms Gold while the sun dipped behind the pines.

The next few days blurred into that glorious rhythm of simple pleasures. Mornings started with brekkie on the patio, watching roe deer tiptoe across the fields – I swear one gave me a cheeky stare over the fence. We wandered down to the nearby River Dee, just a short stroll away, skimmed stones and pretended we were pros at it (Dave’s went about two feet before plopping like a stone – ha!). Afternoons meant lazy hikes around the local trails, puffing up gentle slopes with views that made you stop and breathe it all in. One evening, we tried our hand at a full-on cottage supper: tattie scones, venison from the farm shop down the road, and my attempt at cranachan that turned out more like a boozy crumble. Chaos in the kitchen, flour everywhere, but we ate it anyway, giggling over the mess.

There was this quiet moment on the third night, sat by the fire with the windows steamed up from our tea, when I caught myself reflecting. Life back home’s all rush and screens, isn’t it? Here, it was just us, the crackle of logs, and the wind whispering through the trees. Made me realise how much we needed this – no kids, no drama, just recharging with the one I love most. We even spotted a pine marten darting across the garden one dusk, which felt like a proper Highland gift.

Packing up felt bittersweet, but as we trundled back down the road (satnav on best behaviour this time), we were already plotting our return. If you’re after that easy, heartfelt escape with a dash of countryside magic, a spot like this in the Cairngorms is pure gold. Proper restorative stuff.
