About Dumfries And Galloway
Pulling up to the three-bedroom cottage in Leswalt felt like stumbling on a secret hideaway. It’s this cosy rural gem, just seven miles from postcard-perfect Portpatrick and six and a half from Stranraer’s shops and cracking restaurants – close enough for essentials, far enough to feel worlds away. The place screamed family-friendly vibes or a chilled mates’ escape, with space for everyone, a hot tub for bubbling away the stresses, and a wood burner that promised cosy nights in. And right next door? Galdenoch Castle, this striking old ruin that’s basically your private backdrop. Dog-friendly too, which was a godsend for our soppy Labrador. First impressions? Magic – surrounded by hills and trails, I was already itching to explore. What I loved most, though, was how this spot lured us into the area’s hidden gems, all discovered by happy accident. We set off for what I thought was a quick walk along the Loch Ryan Coastal Path – it’s about seven miles of stunning shoreline – but took a sneaky detour through a unmarked farm track. Blimey, it led us to this tucked-away cove near Leswalt, where the pebbles crunched underfoot and seals bobbed about like nosy neighbours. No crowds, just us, the waves, and a thermos of tea. The kids went wild building epic sandcastles on the nearby beaches, letting off steam while we parents pretended we weren’t knackered. Another day, aiming for Stranraer’s high street for fish and chips, we veered off down a single-track lane marked only by a faded signpost. It spat us out at this forgotten little harbour spot, where weathered fishing boats bobbed and a lone fisherman shared tales of lobster pots over a cuppa. Pure gold – off-the-beaten-track magic you’d miss if you stuck to the map. Even getting properly lost on the hills behind the cottage paid off; we stumbled on a wildflower meadow buzzing with bees, perfect for a picnic that turned into an impromptu game of rounders. Laughing till my sides hurt, watching the dog chase shadows. Looking back, I reckon that’s the real joy of a place like this – it rewards wandering. I’m usually the one glued to Google Maps, overthinking every step, but here I let go a bit. No grand plans, just serendipity. We came home sun-kissed, full of stories about secret coves and hilltop views, already plotting the next getaway. If you fancy ditching the tourist traps for Dumfries and Galloway’s quiet wonders, this corner’s calling your name. |
