About Dumfries And Galloway
I’ll never forget the drive down to Dumfries and Galloway – that winding A75 from the motorway, with the hills rolling out like a rumpled quilt under a sky that couldn’t make up its mind whether to rain or shine. I’d been buzzing with anticipation the whole way, picturing lazy afternoons by a wood-burning stove, but then, classic me, I took a wrong turn just past Gatehouse of Fleet. Ended up on some narrow single-track lane, heart in my mouth as a tractor loomed round the corner. A quick reverse into a passing place and a sheepish wave to the farmer, and I was back on track. Lesson learned: satnavs are grand, but they don’t account for my hopeless sense of direction.

Pulling into the exclusive grounds of Penninghame Estate felt like slipping into a secret world. The apartment, tucked into the old stable block of Penninghame House, hit me with the best first impressions – spacious enough for our little group, all cosy nooks and welcoming vibes in this quiet spot right by the Galloway Forest Park. Privacy? Tick. Peace? Double tick. We dumped the bags and just breathed it in, that fresh forest air wrapping round us like a hug.

From that moment, the holiday became a masterclass in doing precisely nothing – and loving every second. No grand plans, no ticking off lists. Just lazy cottage days stretching out like warm honey. Mornings started slow: I’d potter out to the garden with a cuppa, the dew still sparkling on the grass, and flop into a lounger with a dog-eared paperback. The garden’s a proper gem here – wildflowers nodding in the breeze, birdsong everywhere, and not a soul in sight unless you count the odd rabbit hopping about like it owns the place. I’d lose hours there, flipping pages while the sun climbed lazy-like, feeling the tension from work melt away.

Afternoons? More of the same, but with bells on. We’d wander the grounds a bit – nothing strenuous, mind, just enough to stretch the legs – spotting deer in the woods or listening to the rustle of leaves in the forest park. Back inside, it was board games on the table (I’m rubbish at Scrabble, always picking vowels), or sprawling on the sofa with a pot of tea and biscuits. One day, I caught myself staring out the window at a squirrel scampering up a tree, mesmerised, and had a proper chuckle. When did life get so frantic that watching a squirrel felt like peak entertainment? That gentle nudge of self-reflection hit home: sometimes, the best recharge is switching off completely.

Evenings were pure bliss – firing up the stove, cracking open a bottle of wine, and letting the world fade. No telly blaring, no emails pinging. Just us, the quiet, and the soft glow of the fire. Dumfries and Galloway has this magic for slowing you down, especially in a spot like this. By the end of the week, I felt lighter, dafter in the best way, and utterly reluctant to leave. If you’re after a holiday that’s all about savouring the simple stuff – garden lounging, bookish escapes, and not much else – this is your spot. Proper tonic for the soul.
